    Kemper Zig Zag Saw K-31

I have heard of using these for slot work. I just got 2 in the mail today. I have an Altinok that I was a bit unhappy with the slot. A couple of stokes with one and there was a world of difference. You can find them on Amazon and I think eBay. I also have heard that Steve at Vermont Freehand stocks them as "Slot Tools".

Just go easy. They are agressive and you could quickly ruin a slot.

I'm going to feel stupid, but, to what slot are you referring.

The slot is where the airway in the stem widens.

I wonder if it would help a pipe that the hole in the stem and the hole in the shank don't line up...or if I would ruin a pipe.

Your best bet there would be to go to the hardware store and buy an appropriately sized counter sink bit. You should be able to turn it by hand, do not use a drill. This way the end of the tenon is a funnel and will greatly reduce any turbulence caused by misalignment.
