What's you guys' view on pokers/nosewarmers?

I love the look of the short stubby nosewarmer/poker pipes but have never smoked one.

What are pros and cons in your opinion?

I would think the smoke would be hotter since there is such a small distance for it to travel, but don't know if that is accurate.

Savinelli has this one for a very reasonable price (less than $80) and it looks really cool IMO.

Also there is a new poker cob designed by the Dagners that is really cool looking as well and would give the opportunity to try it for not much money.

I love the look of them. Don't have one yet, so that is all the commentary i can make.

I have had a poker in the past and it smoked good, but it is not a favorite shape of mine. I have a Ropp Cherrywood poker that I like.

Shortest pipe I've smoked is an Italian bollo pipe (fishermans pipe). It's 3 inches and it did smoke hotter than a 6 inch pipe.

Gentlemen... everything in engineering is a compromise ......

It seems to me the main advantages are that it is sturdier and easier to carry out and about.
The main disadvantage would seem to be that it is rather challenging to achieve as cool a smoke.

    Best wishes, Dafiddla

P.S. Oh yes... good points about being easier to clinch and easier to set it down without it falling over

I'm a holder, rather than a clincher, so nose warmers aren't of any benefit to me. A good many pokers have the shallow, wide, bowl configuration that I like. And they're usually sitters, a plus. But the one in your link has a filter – a big negative for me.

I only have the one I made so its no pro job but I really enjoy it. Easy to clench if busy doing something and nice and light. Also smoking an aro its nice having the smell right under the nose. Plus easy to stuff in a pocket I you're out.

IMO a poker nosewarmer is the ultimate hunting/fishing pipe; fits easily in a hunting coat pocket and sits upright for when you have to set it down to take a shot or reel in a fish. I have a few shorty pipes of differing shapes and I haven't found the shortys to smoke any hotter than any other... but then I'm a very slow smoker. I generally don't clench a pipe except briefly when I need two free hands on short notice - I'd sooner just stuff it in my back pocket for a minute so having the bowl close to my face doesn't really matter much. I'm with 'PipeSmoker' though on the filter. That it has a filter would be a deal breaker for me.

I agree about filters. I have a few pipes that take one. However there's never been one in them.

If you don't use a filter in a filter pipe it's harder to keep the draft clean. At least that's what I suspect. I've never owned a filter pipe, so maybe I'm all wet about that.

I like to just quickly pass a pipe cleaner down the stem after a smoke especially if and while the pipe is still warm and moist - should it happen to be moist anyway. You can't do that with a filter in the way. And if you smoke without the filter, you can't clean out the filter cavity without pulling out the stem. Should you want to use the filter, that's just one more thing to buy, carry around, stock up on and dispose of. No thanks. Plus, IMO filters mess with the taste of the smoke.
