    Packed pipe

So gentleman and ladies. I am new to the pipe scene and am curious about a few things. 1. If you pack a fresh bowl how long is it safe to stay in the pipe before smoked?Recently I've been packing up a briar with some aromatic and a briar with some non aromatic. I eventually smoke both throughout my 12 hour work day.
Which leads to my second question. How long is it safe to leave a half or partially smoked bowl in there.?
I haven't noticed anything negative so far but just curious if there was general practice. Thanks folks and cheers.

I've heard tales of folks loading a pipe, setting it on a book shelf somewhere and forgetting about it for years only to find it one day and fire it up to find a great smoke waiting for them. However, I wouldn't count on that being the case - seems it could just as well go the other way. That being said, many times it's good practice to load a bowl the day before and smoke it the next day - lets your tobacco dry out slowly and there's no risk of it shattering into dust while loading a bowl like it would if you over dried it before hand.

As far as partially smoked bowls; it all depends on the tobacco. I've nursed the same bowl along for 3 days - not consecutive either, day or two off in between - and had a perfectly enjoyable smoke every time. Other times, I've set it down for an hour and come back to a nasty, unsmokable mixture that I was sorry I left stewing in the pipe. You'll find which mixtures play this game well and which ones bow out after an hour or so left to get cold.
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

Answer to the first question depends on the moisture content of the tobacco when it was loaded into the bowl. I would estimate the maximum wait time to be 3-5 days for a tobacco that is various degrees high in moisture. A tobacco that is ready to smoke should not be left over a day, since it might dry it out too quickly.

The second question is a matter of taste. I'll pick up my partially smoked pipes during the next 24-36 hours; but then I usually finish them in one smoke after I fire it up. Most of the time you may be getting a tastier smoke, since the unburned tobacco has been stoved from all the heat. Sometimes that doesn't always happen when the moisture gets the best of the tobacco and it takes on a bitter tinge. I just fired up a bowl of pre-smoked Velvet and it is much mellower on the second light-up.

Basically, the same as what Haebar and Zurg said.
I'll sometimes pack up a bowl and then stick it in a zip lock bag if I find I can't get to it right away.
I've also come back to a half-smoked bowl the next day, and it was just fine.
    Pipes are usually very forgiving.

They call it DGT (Delayed Gratification Technique) when you smoke a partial bowl and come back later. Certain blends in definitely improves. Just try it and figure out on your how long you like to leave a bowl, and especially which blends it works with. A lot of people say you shouldn't do it with a heavy Lat blend-- I'm glad I tried it because I found it worked fine. But you may find it revolting, so-- experiment!

First, thanks to all. I imagined it would be a trial by error on my tastes type of thing. I had good results so far with a pipe that sat three days unsmoked.

I quoted this one because I have found I cannot handle lat at all in the slightest. Maybe down the road as I evolve.

    Thanks gents Packed pipe
