    Material Qualities

    Hey Piper Bums!
Not really a piper, but thanks to @Emperor Zurg I have a cob & some Pete Stokkebe (sp?). So I occasionally smoke a bowl. Plus my Dad was a piper, so I remember some of the delicious smelling blends he would smoke.

Now I read Pete's ( @NeverBend ) poll about your favorite material and it has me wondering about the smoking characteristics of the different materials?
Why do you like your favorite pipe material? Does the tobacco burn better in one vs the other?
    Enlighten me!

    Hi Brian,

Good to see you on this side of the pond.

Excellen question that's a better topic than my poll.

Like cigars, taste is personal. I prefer briars because I get excellent flavor distinction (I can pick up the different tobaccos and their nuance and interplay) as well as a warm tone (varies pipe to pipe as below).

Briar is inconsistent in taste and quality, even across the same brand and line. Even with the best intentions there are some briars that just don't smoke well. Ypu'll find smokers who dedicate briars to one type or specific tobacco that they perform better with. Bottom line is that no two smoke the same and even two equally good pipes will have subtle differences in how they smoke and taste.

    Pete

My favorite is my Gourd Calabash because it always smokes cool, dry, and the tobacco burns all the way to the bottom of the bowl.

I like cobs, meerschaums, and clays, but I like briars the best for several reasons. They are more durable than clays or meerschaums. I like the uniqueness of the wood grain in each pipe; they are almost like snowflakes in that no two are exactly alike. I like the way they look and the way they feel in my hand. I like them for other reasons but they escape me right now.

    That's a sweet looking pipe!....
Like my father before me, I will work the land,
