Burnt out my tongue
I tried to get as much pipe smoking in as possible this week for one reason or another and I think I burned out my tongue. My nose isn't so happy either. I only had a few bowls a day, but most were fairly robust blends - Night Cap, St. James Flake and today Happy Bogie. After the Happy Bogie experience I tried to calm my senses down and maybe taste something sweet so I lit up some Shenandoah. I tasted and smelled almost nothing at all. Later in the day on my drive home I smoked a cigar and got nothing.
So I'm hoping this weekend by giving my body some time off from tobacco altogether I will regain my taste and smell.
Has anyone else had this happen?

Sounds like you burnt your taste buds. Take a few day break and they should come back around.

This is going to be hard...but heed my advice.
Stay off the juice (alcohol) for at least 5 days and tobacco for 6. After about a week, you will be in tip top smoking shape again.
Always listen to what your body is telling ya. When you quit tasting that shiz, time to lay off the pipe for a while.

Thanks!
I haven't been drinking lately - wait, maybe that's the issue... just kidding. Yes, no alcohol or tobacco. Let my taste buds heal.

Taste buds have a life cycle of 10 to 14 days. If you burned them, don't fear, they grow back.
And YES, I've over done it before and wiped mine out. Mostly when I was learning to smoke a pipe and a few with cigars (way too many in a day)

I have too...it is usually a mixture of too many bowls, puffing too hard, and not drying tobacco enough.
Nothing like that fresh, "Why does my tongue feel like I sucked on sand paper all day" feeling ya get the day after over doing it
Gotta build up to it, I've had 7 bowls today throughout the day and I have to say that I feel 100% fine. Probably gonna have one more before bed. It is just knowing how to smoke it and when to stop

Yep. Been there. Except mine was coupled with burning my mouth with way-too-hot soup, and too much smoking.
Give it a week. Don't eat anything scaldingly hot, or drink anything way too hot, either!

I think I combined all three of those, too many ( for me), puffed too hard and tobacco too wet.
The wetness I think was the main culprit. I puffed hard because of it, relit too often and got it too hot to keep it lit.

I'll also add that being hydrated (with water) is key to keeping that oral flora nice and healthy; ready to taste all the tobacco goodness.

Indeed. I try (key word there is try) to only drink water or tea while smoking pipes. Nothing fights tongue bite like good ol' H2O. Of course I also drink a lot of coffee with my pipes, especially burley.
Oh, and I guess sometimes (lots of times) I drink some beer with my pipes
