Question Cigar Box Storage In Wooden Humidors

    Hello everyone,
Had a quick question I wanted to run by you all. Every box of cigars I have bought up until now I was able to take them out and put the singles into the humidor. I would always do a inspection for mold etc... Before placing them into the humidor as well.

Now with the 2 new and much larger humidors I just got I want to do things a little different. The standing humidor will be used for all singles still, but the foot locker will be used for box storage.

For those of you with experience in this type of storage I ask for some advise.

I know to take the plastic off the boxes, but after that do you do anything else? Do you have a process you go through prior to putting the cigar boxes into your wooden humidors, and if so what is it and why?

I will be placing some fairly large cigar orders in the coming weeks and wanted to ask this question before proceeding.

    TIA
    Chris

I don't have a large wooden humidor (other than the cedar shelves) I got a wineador that I put my boxes in and don't do anything too fancy to then, other than a visual inspection and a very close look for termites now.

I have a pretty big humidor but its filled with more singles than boxes. I found some wire trays at a dollar store and my cigars are stacked in there. If it came in a box it stays in a box but rare for me. This is my long winded way to say make sure you have more media than you may need and spread it thru the humidor. Boxes will absorb some of that moisture too and with little to no air flow your humidity may not be uniform. I have 3-4 hygrometer spread thru mine. I have boveda spread thru out my humidor and I have a Tupperware of silica cat litter the combination of those 2 has not failed me in 5 years.

    Thanks,
I have 6 320gram boveda packs in each of the big ones, they call for 4 but I rather have more in there to keep things in check. I was just curious if you all tookout the cigars and inspected them, then put them back into the box they came in and what not. I appreciate the feedback!

Not trying to hijack your thread but I've been meaning to ask this question, and maybe you can benefit too!
Do you guys open (in storage) your painted boxes?
I know that the unpainted will absorb and ultimately all rh to pass through once its seasoned. But what about the painted ones??

I don't treat them differently, the seal in any box isn't that great (aka might as well not be there) and since those boxes will be there for years they'll have plenty of time to acclimate. Plus I open them every 3 months or so just to make sure.

Probably dont have to, but I do. Sometimes its just leaving the tac-nail sticking out, others is slipping somthing under the lid.

    No Brian,
That is something that I had not even considered and am glad you brought it up.

I always keep my cigars that come boxed in their boxes when I put them in my humidor. I don't usually even crack them open. I also keep everyone at 62-63%, so that probably helps too.
