This may have already been asked before, but how do you choose which cutter to use?
I know of the guillotine, punch and vcutter. How do you choose which cutter to wield?

Palio for me. All the time. Have several options but really never even debate. It just works so good.
Never much luck with a punch as it seems tar builds up more frequent. Guillotine until I got my xikar v cut.... Now nothing but v cut no matter the size. No more too much, no more too little. Perfect everytime.
Just got my Cuban Crafters Perfect Cutter and so far it's...well...perfect!
I'm with @sparky426 . Xikar v-cut every time. :)
V-cutter for me as well.
The only exception is Sancho Panza Double Maduro - the caps will not withstand v-cutting. They can usually take a very sharp punch, almost always a very sharp guillotine.
I love my punch. No tar problems because my RH is high and I smoked slowly.
:dejection:Well, I HAD a Xikar Xi2, 'til I lost it :dejection:
Am looking at a V-cutter, weighing that against another guillotine
I've been using my montecristo punch for the summer and I love it.
But now you guys have me very interested in v-cutters...
If I need to cut, I use a colibri CAO grip cutter that I got with a box purchase from CI.
Your local B&M can provide a v-cut if you want to try it, or if you have ABC Liquors near you you can pick up a cheap one for about 4 bucks that will last for a while. That's where I got one and after using it for a couple of weeks I knew it was the cut for me. After that I picked up the Xikar and even got the Xikar keychain v-cut so I'm never without one. Yeah, I have a problem.
I used a standard guillotine cutter for a long time then I was gifted the xikar scissors which I liked and used a lot. Now after picking up a Cuban Crafters perfect cutter a few months back I have not used anything else. I really like this cutter. I do want to give the v cutter a try one of these days though.
The Perfect Cutter works great but I still prefer my V-cutter and if it still needs to be opened more another swipe with the v-cutter to make an X works great.
Whatever is closest ;)
Though I will say I'm starting to understand the beauty of the v-cutter. It's fast. No lining anything up, no cracking the cap. I can do two v-cuts in an X pattern faster then I can punch or guillotine.
Another vote for the Perfect Cutter.
Recently it's been the v-cut more often than not. The main exceptions are when I have some sort of torpedo style cap or a box pressed cap that I don't think will lend itself to the v-cut very well. Then it's a guillotine.
I haven't had any big ring gauge cigars yet, but I have a punch cutter on one of my lighters that I've used from time to time that I'd probably use on a large RG cigar.
Just for fun, try the v-cut on a torpedo some time. I was very pleasantly surprised by the result. When I first tried it my reasoning was that if it didn't work well I could always just use the guillotine to fix it. Instead it was awesome. I know that everyone will have their own preference and that is as it should be. For me, though, I haven't found anything a v-cut hasn't worked very well on.
I used to be all guillotine cutter, but I find that too fancy and pretentious now. I recently switch over to the box cutter. Great for all shapes of cigars!
Perfect! Thank you for all the responses. I was leaning towards grabbing a v-cutter before this post, but wanted to talk to the experts before I did.
I usually V an box pressed cigar. Otherwise its a guillotine, unless I'm smoking while mowing. Then I punch it, just because my punch is in the room with the mower so it's convenient. If you are going to get a V cutter, the Xikar XV is the way to go IMO as well. I love it. Super sharp and doubles as a cigar rest if needed.
Xikar 9mm punch
I'm with these guys - the other cutters just sit in my "Cigar Paraphernalia Display Box" while my Xikar V-Cutter remains with my "I use this stuff when I smoke cigars" bag. It is my one and only go-to.
Do it - you won't be disappointed. You might end up ditched your others.
as you very well should be. Try one out - improve your life.
No question - go for a V!
I've posted a fantastic accessory review of it in the past - perhaps I'll post up here as well!
We're talking the Xikar V-cutter, not a "V-cut", right? The two confuse me sometimes.
Why do you like the wedge-shaped V-cutter over a regular guillotine? Both use two blades that meet to slice off part of the cap. Is it the ergonomics?
And it's the feel of still having part of the cap in place while having more draw than a punch. At least it is for me. :)
The Xikar V-Cutter actually only uses one blade. And I'm with @CoachDread , I like the larger surface area of the cut while still keeping the cap intact.
Plus one to all these statements. O and this.
I do like having the cap intact (I almost exclusively punch). I may have to try one of these sometime.
I know the only problem you can run into is with really small rg cigars.
[Music] Torn between two lovers.........
I have used a Cuban Crafter Perfect Cutter for years and love it. But I received a Xikar v-cutter for Father's Day, used it and had a cigar with a perfect draw. I will have to update this as I use both types.
@SeanTheEvans , @sparky426
Took both pieces of advice, and +1 on the shameless plug for Xikar. Guaranteed for life, the Craftsman of cigar tools!

How slick is that?! Magnetic attachment, and it's 5/8" thick!
