I recently emptied out a bunch of jars for trades, etc. Do I need to replace the lids when I reuse a Mason jar for tobacco or will the gasket still work? I have only used the jars for tobacco since I bought them.

I would think they would be just fine to use. Just wash and dry very well before re-use.
I always replace them if I plan on using them for long term storage. If I'll only be storing the tobacco for a short time, I'll reuse them. I don't think you get a full seal with a used lid. If you look at the gasket of a used seal, you can see the indentation from the rim, so I assume the seal won't be as good.
Thanks, that's what I was looking at, the indentation from the jar lid, and wondering if it would seal good again. I will buy some new lids since I don't know how long I will be storing the tobacco.Quote:

I tend to be cheap, so I take a piece of Saran wrap and fold it into a square that is 4 layers thick and place it under the lid before screwing the ring on. I find this emulates the rubber gasket that wears down over time.

Replacement lids are cheap. You just replace the disk.
Not so much an issue all the time, but I always carefully check the rim of the jar as well as the lid. Sometimes small bits of 'baccy will get compressed on the rim, ruining the seal. Other than that, if it seals I can usually tell. I tend to take the leaf that I am using every few days out of the jars and load my pipe pouches - one with English, one with Va / VaPer blends. Aros I just leave in ziploc bags since they usually don't have drying issues. :)
Now what to prep for tomorrow morning....thinking either a rope or a plug.
