That some funny lookin block meerschaum.
Then I'm guessing its a Tanganyika Countryman.
[QUOTE=Haebar;62019]I'm thinking it is dyed African meerschaum. It is stamped "Genuine Block Meerschaum" on the bottom of the shank.[/
Nice looking pipe Haebar.
I found this that may help
African meer is nice and solid, well made, good smoker, and you can still find some. Mine is from the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation from Amboseli Pipes, Genuine Block Meerschaum, has an elephant on the stem. I have seen a couple in the last few months on Ebay.
African meerschaum is younger so it hasn't been under great pressure as long as white Turkish meerschaum that would purge the extractives that lead to a mottled color, somewhat heavier and less ability to be carved completely smooth. It's also harder but can crack. Depending on the block, they're often carved in whole (like yours) or partially. If you see them smooth they tend to be mottled or colored often with a smoke'rim. Enjoy it.
Thanks you guys for your information. Back in the late seventies, my parents gave me a carve-your-own meerschaum kit and it came with a stem with the same elephant on it.
Very interesting that the kit had the same stamp...
On a side note, I'm very sorry I disappeared again. Work has me fighting for my life and you all will see a bit less of me in the next couple months.
Tomorrow morning I'll send you some happy bogie and rum twist. I apologize for not sending it sooner.
