Hey fellow bums. I've been smoking cigars for a couple of years now and have recently delved into the piping world. Man, I'm loving it. My poor humidor is suffering from separation anxiety because it has been neglected.
Anyway here we go.
Tobacco name - Orlik Golden Sliced
Age - Unknown
Blend - Pressed Virginia flake with what the manufacturer call 'an angels breath of perique'
Smoked in - MM Legend bent
This is the first flake tobacco I've tried and I was debating whether to rub it out or just fold and stuff. After watching video tutorials on Youtube regarding flake tobacco, I decided to fold and pack. I used one full flake, folded once length wise and then three times the other way. It was a little firm packing it in and I was afraid it was too densely packed but the draw was good and loose so I decided to go with it.
After a pre light and a quick tamper with the old golf tee, I gave it a good light and settled back on my balcony to enjoy.
The flavors are fairly straight forward with a nice subtle sweetness that is very tasty. Nice hay flavor and maybe a hint of nuttiness. I read one reviewer that said he tasted citrus and apricot. Personally I did not pick up on these flavors, but my palate is not as refined as some. Coming from cigars, I have learned that the flavors are much more subtle with pipes, at least in my limited experience.
I've never smoked a perique blend before but I've heard it is spicy. I didn't get a lot of spice. There was a little on the retrohale at times but it was not prominent and didn't appear throughout the bowl. I was glad for this as I tend to favor smokes without a lot of spice.
The strength is mild. I got no vitamin N buzz at all.
I only had to give it a couple of relights for the entire thing which was great. I did get a tiny bit of tongue bite but that was my own fault. I got a little overly aggressive puffing and heated it up a bit.
Overall this is a very good smoke and for the price there is no reason to be without some.
