BryGuy reviews Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake

    Date: 3/10/15
Tobacco: Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake
    Age: Less than a month
    Blend Contents: Straight Virginia
    Pipe: Missouri Meershaum American Legend
    Tin Note: Dark fruits
Prep: Rubbed out and let sit for 20-30 minutes.

    Notes:
Just to warn you up front, this review is not going to be that great.
It is 2:30 in the morning, and I’m not feeling that detail-oriented.
Although I don’t have a lot of nuanced input, I had a revelation during this smoke. This smoke hit me over the head with the Virginia “hay.” So much so that I said, out loud, “Oh, THAT’S the hay they’re talking about!” I was brought back to my early childhood. My grandfather had a farm, and once my brain found the hay in the tobacco, I went right back to his farm. He even burned off the stubble in the field while I was there. Uncanny how similar it is in my mind right now.
Once I recovered from the hay epiphany, I also noted something that smelled like pecan shells, both fresh and burned.
I was very happy with this experience, and look forward to delving more into this tobacco.

    Thanks for the review Bryan!

If you have another tin, leave it for a few years & prepare for magic when you open it.

I have to quit reading these reviews - they just make me go buy more tobacco!

Thanks for your insights. The discovery of VA flakes really took my pipe smoking to a new level.

I thought I did a review here of FVF. Cant find it so I guess not. I bought some 3 yrs ago and tried it fresh and was not impressed. Wet hay came to mind. Did not know what all the fuss was about. That was in May of 2012. New to pipes and cigars and aging of course was something I did not understand and its effects on tobacco. So in May of 12 I put it in jars and forgot about it. In the last few months I really found the pipes to be more to my liking and started going through everything. I opened up my 3 yr old FVF and was WOW. It reminded me of Lane 1Q and I mean that as a compliment to FVF. I happen to like 1Q a lot, its not as strong as 1Q but similar flavor profile. Of course FVF has not topping, is not a aro. But just WOW what time does. I now have over 2 lbs of it of varying age after making a trade for some with time. Its worth buying some to put away.

    Hey Bryan.

I just posted a review of this and then saw your review from just a day before.

I agree it is really good stuff. I get the grassy/hay flavors as well.
I too am planning to buy a couple of tins and see what a year or two will do to them.

    Thanks and happy smoking.

Yeah, that's probably what I'll do.
That's like getting a tin and a half for free.
