BryGuy reviews Samuel Gawith St. James Flake
Date: 3/14/15
Tobacco: Samuel Gawith St. James Flake
Age: About a month
Blend Contents: Perique, Virginia
Pipe: Nording straight briar
Tin Note: Dark and sweet. Dates & prunes. Green hay.
Prep: Rubbed out and let sit for an hour or two.
Notes:
First, let's set the stage. It is wet outside, so I知 standing in my back doorway watching my dog explore the back yard. I知 also running in and out doing quick chores around the house, so I知 putting the pipe down after a few minutes to do something, then picking it back up again for a few minutes. Therefore, I知 hitting the tobacco with an abnormally high number of relights.
As I smoke, I知 definitely getting the green hay aroma from the virginia. I pops in and out each time I come back to the pipe. I知 glad the relights don稚 burn out that subtle sweetness! I picked up a bit of plum once, and a pepper spice.
The perique adds a nice spiciness. I would put this on par with the FVF, but for use in different circumstances. I would choose the FVF for days when I could just sit and contemplate the nuances of the tobacco. I could choose the SJF for busy or more distracted days. The flavor is bit bolder, and I don稚 have to focus on it as much.
I really like this one. I知 going to get another box and jar it up to see what some age does to it.

Hi Bryan,
Most folk who review seem to do so while sitting and that's not always the way that we smoke. Like you, I often have to move around with the pipe in my mouth and your review is refreshing in candor and because it's one of the ways that we all have to deal with smoking a bowl.
Thanks for the review.

Thanks, Pete.
I don't have the most educated palette yet. I try to make up for that with what I DO pick up - the feelings and moods I experience along with the flavors and aromas.
Hopefully, the sharing of the experience balances out the lack of nuance in description!
