Total noob needs pipe tobacco recommendations... Today?..
I have a BnB Groupon I need to spend today and was thinking of getting a couple of tins along with my Fuentes and Ashtons... I tried smoking a pipe once and it was sour and horrible, but have been wanting to try again. I have a full rotation of estate pipes from my dad, which all need to be cleaned, plus a new cob.
BnB has lots of Dunhill, Davidoff, Ashton, Cornell &Diehl etc. http://www.bnbtobacco.com/pipe-tobacco/products/ So far I'm leaning towards Ashton Flake Medallions and Dunhill Aperitif. Both have good reviews and seem very different from each other. The only baccy I currently have is an English house blend from Racine & Laramie in San Diego. Any suggestions appreciated....

I drink your milkshake
I'd suggest:
MacBaren Navy Flake
Dunhill 965
Cornell & Diehl Habana Daydream or Pennington Gap
Davidoff Flake Medallions
I've smoked most of these and found they were good quality. All of them have many positive reviews on TR.
Pipes are quite different animals from cigars. Also, make sure you clean your estate pipes. Many times they will retain flavors from prior smoked blends. Might be best to stick with new cobs for awhile.

Great, thanks guys! No love for the Dunhill Aperitif, huh?
@spyder
, yep that's why I got the cob. I'm thinking I can figure out if I even like pipes before going through effort of cleaning them. I was going to to it as a winter project, but never got around to it.

I have not yet smoked it, so I can't offer an opinion on that one. I've heard good things, though.

Fair enough. The reviews do sound really good. I may just go for it. Thanks again.

Try these bulk tobaccos.... Sutliff Virginia Slices, McClelland No. 2015 Virginia Flake and Perique, Lane HS-3, Peter Stokkebye Luxury Twist Flake and Scotties Butternut Burley. These tobacco blends will not ghost a pipe too much and have low or no tongue bite and are high on the flavor list in my opinion. Smoke in a Bent Country Gentleman for the true cob experience.
If you are into Latakia blends I recommend Crowley's Best, Hearth & Home's Marquee series BlackHouse and Whiteknight.

Chico - there are thousands of pipe tobacco blends out there, and individual tastes vary widely, so you pretty much have to do a lot of exploring to see what suits you. I would also recommend looking into pipe smoking technique as it's very different from cigar smoking (I'm bismokual - I do pipes and cigars, pretty much 50% of each).
That having been said, I keep lists what what I like and don't like, so here's my "like" list, in no particular order:
Esoterica Margate
Home and Hearth Black Horse
Sutliff Sweet Virginia
McClelland P.M.
Balkan Supreme
PS Cube Cut Burley
Newminster 400 Luxury Flake
Pretty much all PS flakes
Esoterica Penzance
Dunhill Nightcap
Newminster #1 Natural
Rattray's Virginia Flake
Esoterica Stonehaven
Rattray's Marlin Flake
Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding
Seattle Pipe Club Pike Place
G&H Louisiana Flake
SG Full Virginia Flake
Mac Baren Flake
Dunhill Ready Rubbed
St James Flake
There are a lot more that I like but just haven't gotten around to recording.
Also, a great resource is TobaccoReviews.com: The largest collection of pipe tobacco reviews on the internet., which has thousands of reviews, but also categorizes blends in pretty much every way you can think of.
You oughta know not to stand by the window, somebody see you up there.

Bruck, thanks for the necropost! I've been piping for about a year now and now know a lot of the recommendations you mentioned. Great list though, and good advice!
