I can hardly wait....
The aroma is pretty unique. To my nose, the dominant fragrance is licorice or anise. I haven't worked up the nerve to smoke any yet.
Being a big fan of licorice, I'm looking forward to this.If that flavor comes through on the smoke, I will be in
"Hog Heaven".
All the samples have been mailed. Whichever postal employee gets to open that drop box this afternoon is in for a treat.

"Still remember the Ennerdale Flake debacle."
My wife says it arrived. Am on the ambulance currently, hope to be home tonight
Mine came in today.
I let my wife smell it. She said, "Uh... interesting."
I got mine today, too. I think it smells kind of interesting, too. In the same way that migraines are interesting....
Tried out a tiny bowl to see what I was going to be in for. Not as horrible as I thought, but it is certainly all over the place. I'm sure the Lakeland guys will love it! ;)
Review to follow after I have some more full sized bowls.

A cautious whiff does not yield any warning signs, and Heather and I second the aroma, ground up licorice. @tmoran , due date on reviews? Will be spending the next week going over Piping 101, learning how to properly light and smoke. Very generous sample pack BTW! The dark fired? I wanna chew on it ! Lol
Below is the link to the official review thread. Please make sure to put all official reviews in that thread, in order to help me keep it organized. Mini contests should remain in this thread.
There is no firm date "due date" for the reviews @Usafvet509 , just don't make me send one of my goons out there to "motivate" you. And the ODF is excellent stuff. And heed my warning about Sweet Rum Twist!
Mixture No. 79 Contest Review Thread
Received yesterday. Trying it Friday!
Apparently two of the envelopes were a bit too full and came back for more postage. @Tobias Lutz and @GWBowman your samples will be sent back out tomorrow. Sorry for the delay, I know you can't wait to get your hands on it!
I'm smoking rose leaves with dial soap in order to have my palette ready....:frog:
The air freshener has landed.
Ah yes. The illustrious one has arrived.(que soft violin music in background) Happy to be graced by the presence of my very own baggie of Mixture No. 79, shipped in straight from Casa de Moran. Yet another Saturday of yard work, with whisp of not yet enjoyed pipe smoke running through my imagination. :woohoo:
Mine arrived yesterday. Will be gracing my mm Ozark with its presence tomorrow with my review to follow.
*****MINI CONTEST #1*****
You work in the marketing department at Sutliff. Sales of Mixture No. 79 have been lagging. Your boss thinks the solution is a complete rebrand. Your job is to come up with some type of marketing material. A new print ad, a new logo, etc. He really wants you to capture the "essence" of the blend, and the type of people you imagine smoke it. For simplicity sake, we'll pretend there are none of the usual laws surrounding tobacco advertising. Also, your boss is a cheap SOB, so your only tools are MS Paint (if there is a similar Mac equivalent that is fine), Photoshop, stock images from the web, and anything you can draw manually.
You have one week. The deadline is start of business Monday, 6/22. Off the record, your boss is a bit of a goof, and you know anything that will elicit a laugh is sure to get his praise. This contest is open to all members, even if you are not part of the review contest. The winner will have his or her choice of a full tin of one of the following:
Erinmore Flake 7/13
Peterson Irish Flake 4/14
Orlik Golden Sliced 100g 7/13
SG 1792 Flake 5/13
Dan Hamborger Veermaster 8/14
If I choose more than one winner, first place will get first choice, second will get second, and so on. I also reserve the right to throw in samples and bodyguards to protect the tin.
Good luck!
me too! so glad I wasnt taking a drink! I have no clue how to do that stuff, good luck fellas!
I like @GWBowman 's , He snaged the flower petals and soap..
I tried to sneak up on myself with it.

That was a bust. Maybe tomorrow night. In the mean time, here is the 60 radio ad we'll be starting July first.
Mixture No. 79 Radio Ad
Has the man of the house been coming home a little, let’s say, grumpy-umpy-umpy?
(background: door slam “frickin frackin smitten smatten”)
Buy him a gift that will pay dividends to you. A new pipe and a tub of Mixture No. 79 Pipe Tobacco. Not only is the act of smoking a pipe relaxing, (“ahh”) but it’s medically proven that nicotine counteracts some of the effects of caffeine. (sigh of relief) You know, that evening cup of coffee from the pot made this morning. Let’s face it. Eight O’Clock is a brand, not a vintage. (“yuck”)
But wait. There’s more!
The smell of Mixture No. 79 will bring back memories of his saintly mother, and the flowery “old woman” perfume she always wore. (“Mom” in a relaxing voice) While the taste of Mixture No. 79 will remind him of her threatening to wash out his mouth when he couldn’t control it. (“Don’t want any of that”) Mixture No. 79 will calm him down everytime he smokes it.
So if you want to turn that roaring lion into a neutered* old house cat, get him Mixture No. 79 today!
Announcer should read the following fast in a low voice;
*“Warning: While Mixture No. 79 has not been proven to make men impotent and/or sterile YET, if you come to bed smelling of this stuff, it won’t matter.”
I thought about recording it myself. I've been told I have a face for radio.
Hope I didn't kill off this thread with my macabre sense of humor.... :idunno: In my little world, every day is Halloween!
Ok, the first mini-contest is officially closed. I will have the verdict tomorrow morning, at which time I will be posting up a new mini-contest. Stay tuned...
I was running a little behind getting the results of the first mini contest back. I was carefully pouring over all the entries, weighing all the elements, puffing away in silent contemplation. After much analysis, I have decided to choose two winning entries. Runner up goes to @c.ortiz108 . Now, ladies (if there are any lady pipers out there) and gentlemen. Without any further ado, I present your champion........... @GWBowman !!!
GWB, choose your winnings from the list below. Chico, you get to choose from the leftovers. Thanks everybody for playing!!!!
