Wow, Someone Knows Me
San Lotano Maduro Lancero
I had made notes for this review when I smoked the SL maduro lancero last year, but I never got around to posting the review. Unfortunately I no longer have the pics I took, but the notes are intact.
Tobacco origins
Wrapper: San Andres Mexico
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Honduras, Nicaragua, & AJ Fernandez Select
Rest time: 1+ year
Wrapper aroma: light hay, chocolate, and leather
Cold draw: hay and earth
1st third: This stick started out with rich earth, leather, and pepper notes, reminding me of a Tatuaje blend. While progressing further into the first third, the leather ramps up and some sweet baking spice creeps in. The flavors balanced out halfway through the first third, with a coffee note appearing near the end.
2nd third: The flavors have begun to mellow some. The leather note still dominates, followed by sweet tobacco and coffee. At this point I get an interesting oak bourbon barrel note that mixes in. The smoke starts to become bitter and somewhat harsh (damn tiny RG), but the cigar remains cool to the touch. I gave it a brief flame purge to bring it back online.
Final third: The flavors at this point have settled and become mostly oak and earth. There is a nuttiness present that near the nub.
Final thoughts: While I like this brand, I prefer the robusto or toro over the lancero. I will post a review of the toro up soon.
