Padron 6000 Review

Prelight: This cigar is honestly a bit ugly for carrying a name that has the reputation of being among the best in the world. It is lumpy, and the cap is off-center and poorly made. The band slides freely about – but, I suppose I won’t have trouble removing it. The wrapper has a sweet, musty cedar aroma to it, while the foot adds a bit of a powdered cocoa scent to the aforementioned bouquet. After a shallow clip, the cold draw is like a straw that has a very mild cedar taste. So far, I’m not impressed.



1/3: This cigar starts off with the familiar Nicaraguan pepper-blast. The pepper deafens any other flavors that may be there for some time. But, the smoke output is good, despite the loose draw, and soon an earthy wood and a sweetness emerge. The sweetness keeps developing and reminds me of fruit – cherry perhaps – as well as a hint of cocoa. As the pepper fades to a tolerable level, the wood flavor becomes dominant. The cigar is not delicate, but rather is assaultive in its strength and body.



2/3: The wood has a slight charred taste to it now, but the taste of bittersweet chocolate that is growing keeps it balanced. The strength continues to grow and some espresso flavors increase the bitterness of the cigar. But, wood is still a primary flavor, as I expected it to be considering that this is a Nicaraguan puro. The ash hangs on for a good 1" or more and the burn line remains trouble-free.



3/3: The final third remains fairly consistent with the rest of the cigar, with a (slightly charred) woody profile balanced with bittersweet chocolate. Any other flavors that may have peeked in from time to time are gone now. I set it down after about an hour and a half.

Overall: As I said, I was not impressed by the looks of this cigar, but regardless of that, the construction seemed good; the burn was steady and straight, the smoke was relatively cool, and the draw produced lots of smoke. Speaking of the draw, it was slightly looser than I prefer, but since no tunneling occurred and the smoke was cool, I’ll not fault it. The flavors were OK. Not complex or mind-blowing, but good enough to enjoy the cigar. This is a good cigar for when conversation and company takes precedence over flavor. But, I think there are better cigars out there for the money.

Nice review! The Padron Delicias I had was also pretty ugly, but the MSRP was less at $5. It was a decent smoke.
