Prelight: The cigar definitely looks like a short, fat Cain cigar. The wrapper is slightly oily and smooth, but has a few veins with a slight floral, woody, sweet aroma. The cigar is well packed, and the foot smells of wood and cocoa. Using a v-cut, I get a good pull from the cold draw, which is primarily woody in flavor, but there is just a hint of mint.
1/3: The Cain Nub starts off spicy and sweet, like peppered cream. It’s quite delicious. Soon a strong coffee flavor takes over as the pepper mellows out. There is still a slight creaminess to the flavors, as well as just a bit of woodiness. The first third ends with this delicious amalgam of coffee, cream and wood.
2/3: There is still just a hint of pepper, although the aforementioned coffee, cream and wood is the dominant profile. The burn is great and the ash last for half of the cigar. After the ash drops, there are notes of bitter chocolate, and the cigar has reached full body and full strength. Simply delicious.
3/3: Did I mention that this cigar is delicious? The coffee flavor is still going strong, but the cream has waned and there is a bit of herbal flavors going on now. The nicotine is making me feel all warm and fuzzy. I’m digging this cigar, but unfortunately it is almost done. The coffee turns a little bitter by the end, and as I begin to burn my fingers, I let it go.
Overall: Delicious! I’ll admit, I may be biased because I love Cain cigars. This version is an interesting albeit faithful version of the blend. Great construction and flavors I enjoy. However, the Nub is not a vitola I tend to reach for, so I’ll probably be skipping this one in the future, and just grabbing a Cain robusto, or better yet, the Cain F Lancero. But, if you like ‘em short and fat, give this one a go. Just eat first as the ligero offers an ass whuppin’ if you’re not careful.
