    Drew Estate Undercrown Belicoso Review

    4/28/2014

    Cigar: Drew Estate Undercrown
    Size: Belicoso, 6.0"x52
    MSRP: $8.45
    Strength: Medium-Full
    Wrapper: San Andres
    Origin: Nicaragua

Prelight: There is a light sheen to the mildly toothy San Andres wrapper. A very earthy aroma comes off the dark brown wrapper. The foot smells of cocoa. After acting the mohel, the cold draw is perfect and tastes of wood and leather.

1/3: An extreme pepper kicks burns my nose a little bit at first light, but mellows to an earthy cedar flavor. Classic DE smoke pours off the cigar. The burn becomes slightly uneven but not enough to touch up. A bit of spice joins the flavor profile, but it is not pepper, more of a dusty baking spice of some sort.

2/3: The second third evolves into cream, coffee and nuts. The cedar is now an undertone of the Undercrown. The ash never lasts more than an inch but it is white and solid. As the second third comes to an end, a split appears, but it is nothing major, so I press on.

3/3: Another flavor transition fills my mouth with wood, dry fruit and earth. There is a minty aftertaste that leaves a slight tingle on my tongue. The split never effects the burn. The smoke is even thicker now and chewy. That’s right. I said it.

Overall: The flavor changes were subtle but defined. The burn was almost perfect and the draw was infallible. For the price, which is realistically about $5 per cigar, this is a really good smoke. Honestly though, I was more impressed when I first smoked an Undercrown, but have since had some really amazing cigars so these are a little ho-hum to me now. Still, this is great for an everyday cigar or for a noob to try something delicious without breaking the bank.
To smoke is human; to smoke cigars, divine.
