Cigar Review - MUWAT KFC Chunky

Drew Estate - MUWAT KFC Chunky

    Vitola: Corona
    Length: 4.0″
    Ring Gauge: 46
    Wrapper: Kentucky Fire-Cured, Nicaraguan
    Binder: ?
    Filler: Nicaraguan
    Pairing: Padron Reposado Tequila

I have been interested in trying one of these for some time. The idea of a cigar tasting like a barbecue or campfire was very intriguing to me. So when I came across them in the Corona Cigar Store this past weekend I picked one up. Then I asked them to put it in another bag, away from the other cigars I picked up. Because, well, it smells.

Fit and Finish: This cigar has a very rustic, toothy appearance. The veins are relatively small and the seams are OK. It's not a refined cigar and that's OK too for what it's designed to be. All smoke on the nose.

Draw: A v-cut gives a good draw. As expected, you can taste smoke on the cold draw, along the lines of the campfire they suggest, but I can also taste cocoa, like I would in the other MUWAT line.

Toast/Light: Takes to the toasting well and is quickly lit. Sure enough campfire on the first draw and, surprisingly, the cocoa is there too. It's like the Bait Fish, with hardwood smoke added.

First third: A very mild pepper kicks in at the beginning and I pick up waves of cocoa at times, but this one is really overwhelmed by that smoky flavor. It's not horrible. In fact, I can see why people might like this cigar, but for me the smoky flavor really just overwhelms everything else.

Second Third: Absolutely zero change. Smoke, occasional cocoa and a little tobacco flavor. Again, not bad, just not really my cup of tea.

Final Third: Did I mention no change?

Final Thoughts: So...I really like Drew Estate. I thoroughly enjoyed the MUWAT Bait Fish and I can taste its foundation here. But the smoky taste was just a bit too forward for me to want to have another one. I even paired it with a nice tequila, hoping the smoke would compliment the tequila, and it did. But I enjoyed the tequila far more than I did the cigar and found myself cleansing my palate frequently with said tequila. I didn't really get any of the soapy flavor that @samiam2007 picked up, thank goodness.

    Total smoking time: 45 minutes

Just a suggestion.....I absolutely hated the Chunky/Fat Molly but for whatever reason the pig shape and the Kyoto don't punch you in the face with the campfire flavor. Might be worth a shot for you also

I like the Fat Molly, but I must try more sizes. Eventually, I will find the MUWAT's that are buried in the back and will be able to compare.

I'll have to give it a try. I really do like the MUWATs and with a little less smoke and the tequila it could be worthwhile.

I'm glad you didn't get that soap flavor....that was a terrible experience.

Sounds about like the profile I got lut of it, only I made the mistake of going with the Just a Friend size. Way too much at that size cigar, so I might look to this size in the future.
