Unfortunately, not knowing what those house blends are or what is in them, makes it pretty hard to recommend much...My stand by recommendations for new pipe smokers are always Carter Hall, Prince Albert, Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake, Orlik Golden Slices, Dunhill Early Morning Pipe, McClelland's Frog Morton, and Rattary's Red Rapparre.
Once I know exactly what you like, I can pin-point more blends for you based off of style.
Cobs, Cobs, and more Cobs. You can never have too many cobs my friend. I have plenty of briars, and I still reach for my cobs more often than not.
A local B&M in my town has a wide variety of bulks (none of which satisfied me). After a few visits and repeated pestering, one of the proprietors allowed me access to the cooler where their "in-store blender" selected his base tobaccos from, and there were all Lane Limited and Peter Stokkebye tobacco, all with the original P&C stickers still on. Knowing I could make better blends myself, I just bought the stuff straight from P&C and starting making some of my own blends, and cheaper.
Hint: PS Luxury Bullseye Flake (rubbed out) +35% Latakia makes a delicious English blend.
