I opened a tin of Solani 633, Virginia with Perique, a couple of days ago. Since then, I’ve been puffing the 633 almost exclusively. The perique is applied with a light hand, so I think of this stuff more as a Virginia flake. And a very fine Virginia it is. Medium dark — darker than Dunhill Flake, for example.

Dang-it Alan it might seem that I am puffing in the dark but I am still here. This evening I grabbed what was left of my SG Medium Virginia Flake and went to my Jars and found that I had very little left not enough for a bowl. So I am in the process of going thru my jar stash to see what I am running low on and what I have run out of to create a priority list for my next purchase. I am shocked about what I have already gone thru and have no more. This evening I am smoking a bowl of SG FVF in my Savinelli extra large 606 and topping it off with a large mug of ice cold Guinness Draught brew. I am listening to "Cortege" by the Modern Jazz Quartet and by the way Alan I did turn the lights on.

I have had to lay off the pipe for the last few weeks, so haven't been visiting the forum. At the last pipe club meeting in March, my tongue got bit by some Bengal Slices that someone gave me that were too dry. It took more than two days for the tongue pain to go away, so I was concerned about it and went to the doctor a week later. Diagnosed with thrush, a fungal infection of the mouth; it feels like a bad case of bite. Anyhow, it is just now getting better. That's probably more than you needed to know, but what the heck.

Had a nice bowl of G&H Brown Twist Sliced in a gourd calabash with Bell's Oberon on the side.

My tin of Solani 633, Virginia with Perique, is nearly empty, so I opened a tin of Orlik Golden Sliced, to make an A-B comparison. The 633 (2 yo) and the OGS (5 yo) are both neatly cut rectangular flakes, predominantly Virginia, with a smattering of Perique.

But that’s about the end of their similarities. Tin notes are different (both pleasant). The 633 is significantly darker in color. For flavor, the OGS has a bit of citrus while the 633 tends towards savory. I like both about equally well, but I have to note that the OGS is significantly less expensive. If I were buying more, it would be the OGS. But I have a lot of stock on hand, so a decision isn’t imminent.

And more and more, I’m appreciating the excellence of Wessex Classic Virginia, a dark red ready-rubbed vaper that I discovered several months ago. Priced between the 633 and the OGS, it might beat out both of them.

Just popped in to say I miss you guys!
Life has been busy, and piping and pipe chatting has taken a backseat.
I still pop in and lurk for a minute every now and then, but not much time to sit down and talk!
Recently, I've been smoking ODF, Elizabethan Mixture, Peterson Irish Oak, and what's left of a McClelland Virginia & Rum blend I mixed up a while back.
    Keep it smoky!

Last night after work I put a nice, rounded, cherry-wood heel in my MM Freehand. Now the bowl has the interior shape of a briar pipe. The glue has dried to my satisfaction so I'm taking it for a quick test drive with a musketball of Peter Stokkebye, Bullseye Flake. So far, so good.

Having some McClelland No. 24 in my bent Peterson Kildare.
I thought that I was out of open McClelland blends, but found this jar stuck in the back of my cabinet with nearly 2 oz of No. 24 in it. Pretty happy.
