I love the red cake, too bad it’s no longer out there.

Yesterday I drove to a B&M in Knoxville and bought the last 3 pounds of it that they had. Put it up in some Ball Mason jars this morning. A big loss for the U.S. piping community.

I’ve been looking too, nice score.
I bet it will be brilliant in a few years

I smoked my new Ropp squat bulldog for the first time today, using Wessex Classic Virginia for the break-in tobacco (5 fills). Not great, but not too bad either — thankfully, there was no noxious coating in the chamber

I bought this little pipe from SmokingPipes:

Ropp Vintage Stout Smooth Squat Bulldog | Buy Ropp Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes

I was attracted to it because the squat bulldog is my favorite pipe shape. Lots of character, and I like pipes with broad, shallow bowls — I prefer the taste of smoke from tobacco that hasn’t filtered too much smoke.

This $72 pipe is undoubtedly machine made, rather than hand made. But I don’t care, because it’s well made. E. g., the shank and bit join together with no discernible discontinuity. The grain isn’t going to knock your socks off — kind of mottled, rather than bold streaks. But the mottling is uniform over the whole surface, and looks rather nice, in hand. At least, after I improved the luster of the finish by applying a thin coat of EVOO. And this modest little pipe has some nice features:

    1. Horn bit. I didn’t know that pipes with horn bits were still available — I’d never seen any until I noticed that some Ropp pipes were offered with horn bits.

    2. Delrin tenon. The best tenon material IMO — tough, elastic, and has a low coefficient of friction.
    Cognition?
    On.

Re: “I love the red cake, too bad it’s no longer out there.”

    From Tobacco reviews:

“When it comes to straight red Virginia that's meant to be smoked instead of blended, there's not a lot of competition - for me it came down to McClelland's 5100 or Wessex Brigade Classic Virginia, and Wessex won.

It's ready-rubbed, easy to maintain, cool smoking, and less sweet. Rich, deep, complex, earthy flavors all the way through, it makes me want to bake bread.”

Wessex - Classic Virginia (Brigade) - Tobacco Reviews

I always have some of the Wessex Classic Virginia (actually a vaper), on hand.
    Cognition?
    On.
