Way to go, that's quite an undertaking. Let us know how it smokes after it dries out. I sold one of my gourd Calabashes last week on Ebay; somebody in Hong Kong bought it.

Just got back from a cabin at a nearby state park where I spent the weekend. Smoked several bowls of Daughters & Ryan Rowland in various pipes over the weekend.
Puffed away on some English plug I made a few years back.

Puffing “The Mallard” (Dan Tobacco) in my Tinsky brandy. SmokingPipes says of TM: “…There was no need to add any flavorings to enhance its aroma…”, so apparently a nice room note. I can’t say about that, but it’s a very tasty Virginia with LOTS of flavor.
And SmokingPipes says that this brandy has a “broad shouldered bottom”. That description gives me a chuckle.
Aaaannndddd we are off! No idea if I am doing any of this right but thanks to everyone's help and hours of YouTube videos this is my first go!
Carter Hall was the best thing my local shop if you can call it a pipe shop had. Having it in a Dr. plumb flat grip 9438 as I took a liking to this one out of the collection I got.

Tough to troubleshoot when you don't know what you are doing or havent seen what it's supposed to look like in real life. I have to assume that if I was guessing right I did not let the tobacco out of the pouch long enough to dry out first. I never did get a really good ember on top and when i thought i was finished and couldnt light it anymore with all the junk on top, I dumped it and there were some fresh leaves on the bottom. I also probably packed on the loose side rather than the tighter side so the draw was pretty loose I think but not sure. Even for drug store tobacco it was pretty flavorful i think so I look forward to the good stuff someday.
Have you read @Emperor Zurg sticky? I think it's a very good read/tutorial.
Get a char light at first, let it go out, tamp it down and re-light.
I keep occassionally tamping. And I "purged" to ensure the bowl was lit yet not making it get too hot.
Heading out to burn a bowl of Sweet Rum Twist in my newly cleaned gourd.
Now to select a beverage...
Mmmm... SRT is smooth, tasty and extra rummy this evening. Wonder where the that extra rum flavor is coming from :p
Puffing F&T Special Brown Flake in my old Kirsten. I’m generally not a fan of flavored tobaccos, but this dark Virginia, with its rum topping, is an exception.
STG is now putting all flakes in space-hogging round tins instead of the compact rectangular 50g tins. Consequently, I won’t be buying them going forward. But I’ll have to make an exception for SBF.
My first two fills this morning were Patriot Flake and The Mallard, both made by Dan Tobacco (Germany). They’re rather similar, and I’m trying to decide which one, or both, that I’ll stock.
The similarities: Both are mild with LOTS of delish, but different, flavor. Both have press-aged, fermented Virginias from tropical regions: India for PF; Africa for TM. TM is slightly milder than PF.
The differences: PF is whole flakes, TM is broken flake. PF is moderately pricey, and TM is very pricey ($15 per 50g tin). Because of its lower price, PF is more often “out of stock”.

Working on another bowl of SRT in the gourd. Milkshake stout on the side...
Oh, and happy Reformation Day everyone!

Just got home for the weekend. Smoking some GH Dark Bird's Eye in a Comoy's Guildhall billiard.

FVF in my Savinelli Champagne bulldog.
I opened a 4 yo tin of Dunhill Flake yesterday — a good plain Virginia. Puffing that now in my Tinsky billiard. Only the second day that I’ve smoked it.
I bought this pipe from the American Estates section of SmokingPipes. It had been smoked, but not very darned much. The lower part of the chamber wasn’t even charred. I think that the original owner had put in one fill, but only smoked half of it. That’s the good news — I got an essentially new pipe for significantly less than half the new price.
The bad news is that that one fill was a Lakeland that really colored the pipe. After four fills on the first day, and swabbing its draft with Everclear, the Lakeland coloration is much diminished today. Thank goodness!
Burning a bowl of G&H Louisiana Flake in a bent sandblast billiard with a silver band.
This is a pipe from Neverbend. It smokes nice for a bent :pipe:
Good deal!
You may have been smoking too fast too. If you smoke too fast you can end up with a wet heel because the pipe doesn't have enough time to absorb and dissipate the moisture. If you're outside in the cold you get more condensation too. Either way, just shake that drop out the stem the minute you feel a gurgle. (Or use a pipe cleaner if you're indoors) keeps the heel drier and keeps the nasty stuff out of your mouth :pipe:
Well sort of. Remember, you sip on a pipe. You don't puff on it like a cigar. Proper cadence is varing from light sips to a little heavier ones, and also varying frequency to keep the pipe burning but close to going out... and of course you need to throw tamping into the mix too. I haven't figured it out completely either. I've never smoked a bowl to the bottom with just 1 match. I have gotten my match use down from what it was when I started out though, and about half the time I can manage to burn the bowl all the way down without a wad of wet tobacco at the bottom. However, that will not happen when smoking outside in the cold or when smoking a new pipe without any cake in the heel. Not for me anyway.
I picture a guy with a new pipe and a new tin of Ennerdale.
After 1/4 bowl the tin was in the trash (outside) and the pipe was stinking up a USPS truck en route to Smokingpipes
And the smoker was hovering over the bathroom sink repeatedly brushing his teeth...
:D :D

The same picture comes to my mind! :)
Puffing Patriot Flake (Dan Tobacco) in my venerable Kirsten. And listening to “Smooth Operator” — Sade. Great song — hadn’t heard it for a long time. But it’s better in the evening, while sipping a nice glass of whiskey.
Just finished a bowl of Five Brothers in a Dunhill billiard.

Some Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake in a Savinelli Tundra.
Just finished a bowl of GH Sweet Coconut Twist in an Albert John billiard, or is it an apple... somewhere in between. Watched the Georgia-Kentucky football game and my team (Georgia) won! Cleaned about two dozen pipes this afternoon.
