You should try a tin of Hearth & Home, Frenchy's Sunsabiches and also a tin of AJ's VaPer just for grins. At the very worst it'll give you even more of an appreciation for the higher end stuff. However, I like those two a lot.

Smoked a bowl of my first pressed blend concoction that I made almost exactly a year ago; it's a VaPer cake and it has mellowed out considerably. Smoked it in a "Personal Reserve" bent sandblast Dublin that I just got on Ebay. These pipes were made for Barry Levin who was a pioneer in estate pipe marketing in the late 80's and early 90's. He died unexpectedly in the mid 90's.
Any tobacco burns my tongue if I don't smoke it carefully - especially Va and VaPers. I usually stash them away for a year at least before I even try them. That seems to help a lot. I guess I wouldn't know fresh as I've never tried it that way. After a year or so it doesn't seem to bite any more than anything else.
One blend that bites me fresh is PS navy flake, I know that for sure. It also tastes... sharp -for lack of a better word. Only a year does wonders for that blend.
edit...
I may have misspoke. It might be the Louisiana Red I like. I'll need to go check my stash and see which one I have. Been on a rope and twist kick lately. Haven't been hitting the VaPers much at all.
Smoking some Dunhill Royal Yacht in a straight Dublin meerschaum pipe. It's been a long time since I smoked a meerschaum and I'm really enjoying this. It's so light, clenching it is a breeze.
Some lane 1Q in a Nording churchwarden last night
After filling my pipe with Hamborger Veermaster, I got a sizable crumb in my mouth on the pre-light test draw. It was quite tasty!
PS Lux Twist Flake in my Tally-Ho
Enjoying an unseasonable warm January p.m. with an MM General filled to the brim with John Cotton's Mixture, a smooth burley. I believe it was part of a burley cluster bomb that our friend @Haebar annhilated me with a couple years ago.
Puffing a third fill of Escudo in my Kirsten Mariner. Yesterday Escudo wasn't going so well, but today it's great. A puzzle, that.
Having some McClelland Beacon in my Savinelli Bing's Favorite.
Now having a small bowl of Drew Estate Meat Pie in a cob.
Smoking some Hearth & Home Chestnut in a Sunrise Dublin. This is a good blend; better than the original blend that it was made to emulate, Walnut.

Seems I got a bit carried away yesterday, I rubbed out enough PS LTF
for four bowls. So today I've been smoking my "mistake".:devilspin:
Puffing mild and tasty Hamborger Veermaster in my Kirsten Mariner. This Virginia is just good.
BTW -- I've always sautéed mushrooms in EVOO and/or herbed butter. But it occurred to me that tahini might be good with mushrooms, so yesterday I tried that.
5-1/4 oz of Hen of the Woods (AKA maitakes) mushrooms in EVOO and 1/2 oz tahini (which has a fair amount of oil). It was good! I'll do this again.
G&H Sweet Whiskey Twist in a gourd calabash along with Rochester Mills Red Velvet Ale.
This pairing is a match made in heaven if ever there was one :) The beer is very sweet and positively reeks of vanilla creme. It's a dessert beer if ever there was one and it pairs beautifully with this tobacco. I equate it to a fine cigar with root beer on the side... which I also enjoy very much from time to time.
First pipe in a few days.EGR in a Dunhill canted dublin.
Just finished a bowl of H&H Chestnut in a Sunrise Amber Grain Dublin. Already looking forward to the weekend.

1980 Velvet in a stanwell billiard
2012 Nightcap in Nording churchwarden
Just got back from the Knoxville Pipe Club meeting. We had a new guy show up tonight that I had invited last month. Hope he keeps coming.
Tonight I smoked:
*35+ year old MacBaren's Virginia no. 1 > this was very good but very hard to keep lit for some reason.
*C&D Shandygaff > I enjoyed this blend; it was stronger than I expected in terms of nicotine.
*G&H Sweet Coconut Twist > always satisfying.
Yes, it was one of the more memorable meetings. Always nice to have new folks show up. Seth is a young fellow, just out of college, who is new to pipe smoking and looking for tips and knowledge about pipe smoking.
I'm finishing up the night with another bowl of this 35 year old MacBaren Virginia no.1 in a group 4 Dunhill Bruyere billiard and drinking diet Pepsi.
Velvet in tomato pipe
Wild atlantic in the Nording churchwarden
Nightcap in the bent Viking
Earlier this afternoon I smoked a bowl of G&H Black Bogie in an old group 4 Dunhill Bruyere billiard. The new puppy has been put in remedial house-breaking class after a setback today.

LBF in a Nording freehand natural
C&D epiphany in a bruyere billiard
Starting this weekend with captain Black original in a Stanwell Brushed brown Dublin
My buddy Brad sent up a Brog Churchwarden for me to try. Just smoked some velvet out of it to break it in. Nice inexpensive pipe
Had a couple bowls of McClelland 2015 over the past few days.
I see LBF mentioned a couple times lately. Haven't had that in ages... sounds good. I need to dig that out again. I have a sizable stash of it somewhere and I bet it has 2 or 3 years of age on it by now. I ordered 8oz from (I think) P&C many moons ago. Lo and behold, a full brick of the stuff arrived - something like 1.5 lbs. I notified them of the mistake before opening the pack but they said to just keep it :) so I have at least 2 qt mason jars crammed full of the stuff.

Solani black and white from 2012 in a Nording
Smoking a bowl of some 35+ year old MacBaren's Virginia no.1 in a Dr. Grabow Grand Duke billiard. There's something wrong with this pipe, the Dr. Grabow filters won't fit into it all the way. I tried deep cleaning the area where the filter is supposed to go but still couldn't get it to fit. I wouldn't smoke this tobacco with a filter anyway.

I had a bowl of G&H Black Bogie last night and this morning. Smoked it in that same Dr. Grabow as last time.
