About to put fire to a bowl of Mac Baren HH Acadian Perique in a small, straight Wally Frank apple. The pipe is a Plain Jane and nobody's dream date, but it's a good smoker and the perfect size for when I just want a 15 minute smoke.
I just finished lunch:
* King Oscar "Tiny Tots" sardines (two on each Ritz cracker) with some French's mustard & lots of black pepper.
* Progresso Tomato-Basil soup with a chopped jalapeño, some soy sauce, EVOO, & Cholula hot sauce.
* Chobani plain Greek yogurt with Cholula hot sauce blended in (Cho-Cho yogurt, I call it).
* Blueberries.
* Roasted almonds.
Now alternating fills of Capstan Medium and Solani 633 VaPer. Life is good!
Royal Yacht in one of my favorite pipes, a Mark Tinsky rusticated 6 panel apple with a beautiful dark amber stem. Cool smoking with a wide open draw, everything just tastes better in this pipe.
I had a long day lined up with the third and final sale at my sisters BNB.working around
a dislocated hip and a twisted knee,I still managed to move a furniture store load of stuff.
I snagged my DG ? pipe and a pouch of Virginia Gold Black and Gold,as well as a wallet full
of PS LNF and my Rolo Pocket pipe.Forgot the LNF in the car and couldn't find my pipe tool,
was hidden in my keys,so I managed to get four bowls of VG B&G before the sweats got
me dragging on cigarette after another.Tonight is a HOT bath with epsom salts and some
Captain Black therapy.
Escudo in the only p-lip pipe I've ever owned, a Peterson Killarney 408.
(Well, that was disappointing, time to get the 151 rum out and do some serious pipe cleaning. Gawd, that tasted awful.)
Puffing Fribourg & Treyer Cut Virginia Plug in my 1950 Kirsten Mariner. Lordy, this is fine tobacco. Top-notch, soft–smoking Virginia, and the light topping is delish. It's the only F&T tobacco whose status is nearly always "Currently out of stock" at SmokingPipes. Understandable! If you want to get some you have to request an "in stock" email notification. Pleasant room note to boot.
Just picked up some Rattray's Hal o' the Wind, having some now. A lovely blend :)
Some delicious St. James Flake in a Dr. Grabow Starfire.
Another fill of F&T Cut Virginia Plug. My tobacco rotation list is so long that I'd forgotten just how good this stuff is. I plan to fix that, but I have so much stock on hand that it'll be quite awhile before I'll see any progress.
SPC Mississippi River in a straight John Bessai bulldog. Comes out of the tin quite wet and after an hour of drying it still felt damp to the touch, so I expected some gurgle and bite, but experienced neither. Mild, flavorful, clean burning, just an all around enjoyable smoke.
DE Toasted Black Cavendish in the freehand pickaxe
Totally screwed the pooch today.Took my Rolo Pocket Pipe and a pouch of PS LNF with me to
the final day of the sale.Everything was going smooth.Steady stream of customers, nice cool
temperature, and plenty of chances to fill a bowl.On my third bowl I packed it wrong and when
I went to clean out the dottle I managed to push some back into the draft opening.Pluged it
up right tight, and like a loser I forgot to grab any pipe cleaners. No back up pipe.So had to
sit and stew about it until I got home. It's all good now,I grabbed a cob and packed it full
of Captain Black Royal and I'm on top of it now.
Jim, I have been on a cigar smoking jag the last few weeks so I haven't posted anything in this thread in a long time. Even when I am smoking the pipe on a regular basis, I only smoke three bowls a day at the most. Just this morning I read an article about you in Pipe Collector Magazine, an issue from earlier this year. You are a credit to your hobby, having reviewed 1561 tobaccos to date. Whenever I am considering a purchasing a new tobacco purchase, I seek out your review on it because I know that it will be an accurate one.
I have a Mac Baren 7 pipe case that I keep stocked with a couple fresh cobs, a pack of Dill's pipe cleaners, a Zippo pipe lighter with some wood matches for back up, and a few pipe nails. If I'm going where I expect to be able to smoke I just toss a couple briars and a couple opened tins of tobacco in and I'm ready for anything. Sort of a piper's bug out bag.
Royal Yacht in a handcrafted Nording Scandinavian Original tall brandy with a short broad stem and a wide open, easy draw that I really like.
Started earlier with another round of CB Royal and for a follow up I've LL 125 Anniversary loaded
and ready to burn.Perfect day, temps in the 80's little wind and no chores banging on my head.
I can light up and enjoy a couple games of chess on the computer.
On my balcony smoking some Hal o the Wynd in my bent Savienelli Series III.
It is a pleasant change from the last two days. Went to deer camp to work on the bunkhouse we're trying to get ready before season starts. I took along a couple of cobs and only took one jar of tobacco with me. I bet I smoked 15 bowls of Prince Albert in the last two days. lol
I like it, but I'm ready for something else. :pipe:
Rattray's Hal o the Wind at a microbrewery in Sperryville, VA, an adorable little town that I bet very few of you have ever heard of :)
Esoterica Dorchester in my Savinelli Champagne bulldog.
Was in the mood for a bowl of straight, uncomplicated burley, so I went digging through my cabinet looking for something with a little age on it when I came across a tin of Hal o' the Wynd with a date of December 2008 on it that I didn't know I had. The search for burley ended. It's HOTW in a Savinelli Tundra 315 EX Prince with an ugly dried snot colored stem, and I'm in heaven.
Over the weekend, I smoked some straight Izmir to get a handle on what it adds to the party.
I mainly got some white pepper spice and a numbness on my tongue. I'll delve into it again, I'm sure.
A few years back I bought a number of tins of HOTW from a guy who was giving up the pipe. Many of them had 5+ years of age on them and I quickly blew through them. At the time, the one from Dec. 2008 was only two years old, so I put it in the back of the cabinet and forgot about it. Makes me wonder what else is hiding behind the mountain of tins in there.
I gave up keeping my tobacco physically organized. Instead, I keep a spreadsheet which has one page for each tobacco. That page has one line for each tobacco purchase with a column for number of tins remaining from that purchase, a column for purchase date, and a column for location of the box containing them. E. g., loft or window seat, etc. At the bottom of the page is the total number of tins of that tobacco type.
In addition, I have a "summary" page that has a line for each tobacco, and a column for the total number tins remaining. And at the bottom, the sum of all of the tins in my stock. When that sum falls below 300 tins, I place an order for the most-needed tobacco.
The spreadsheet has a few other bells & whistles too, but I won't go into those.
Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture in a sandblasted Il Ceppo billiard.
Eight year old Hal o' the Wynd in a virgin MM Country Gentleman. I love the added flavor that comes from a new cob when I'm smoking a straight burley or Virginia, but with this beautifully aged Va/Per it's like smoking in a heavily ghosted pipe and detracts from the enjoyment. Live and learn.
SPC Mississippi River in a Peterson Block Meer with a large mug of Moca Java. The draw is a little tighter than I like but I'm a bit nervous about trying to drill out the shank in a meer.
Puffing Solani 633, Virginia with Perique, in my venerable Kirsten Mariner. This has become my favorite VaPer. My order of 23 more tins has stalled. It's been "Greensboro NC - Arrived" for 3 days. Chip, at SmokingPipes, thinks UPS just missed the departure scan. I hope that's it.
And contemplating lunch. Four large eggs fried over medium in scampi butter will be the featured item. Yolks set, but wholly translucent.
I've been smoking Virginia and VaPer. More bowls than usual too, trying to ward off an impending cold.
Don't laugh, sometimes it works... or at least seems like it does. WHERE CAN WE GET THESE PLACEBOS!!!
MacBaren Virginia #1
Zicam Nasal Gel is the best thing I've found for warding off an incipient cold. Unfortunately, our dear old FDA made 'em take the gel off the market in 2009. But I have a lifetime supply in my refrigerator. :)
Puffing F&T Cut Virginia Plug now.
Escudo in a pre WW II Sydney P. Ram straight bulldog.
Today was a fun one,for those of you who have any experience with trailers.Today I loaded and unloaded a 14'
dump trailer with landscaping and red bricks.Just a little sore,:thud:. I get home and the DIL has started SOS for
dinner. Not a bad thing,I like SOS.Then I found out she used a pre-made packet to make the gravy.Ok,I can live
with that,at least it will have flavor. So for an after dinner treat I settled back with LL Butternut Burley in a MM
CG.Might as well have loaded my mystery mix,not a puff of flavor.I was a bit disappointed.:censored: So in order
to salvage my evening I'm loading a bowl Germain's Plum Cake in my DG Savoy.

Bit of a queasy stomach from the greasy canned chili I had for dinner so no pipe tonight. Instead, I'm performing the heart breaking task of going through open tins and tossing those that are crunchy dry, some of which have been open for years. Surely there's a lesson to be learned here.
I've put down the pope for several months. Today I was in the mood.
McClleland No. 2015 Va-Per in MM-CG for the rainy commute to work.
Hearth & Home Fusilier's Ration in a Marxman straight bulldog
