2015 Gawith & Hoggarth Louisiana Flake in a 1964 Barling #4956 smooth poker taper with Diet Coke (decaf).
This pipe has not been a good smoker but this tobacco is tasting good in every pipe. 15 months has made an excellent tobacco outstanding.
Buddy and I went to Dairy Queen for lunch. I was skeptical but it was a decent meal, crispy chicken wrap and fries, bottomless soda (as above) and a nice little sundae for $5.00. They have some lounge seats with arms that act as small tables. Comfortable, we sat and chatted for a couple of hours. Thumbs up to Dairy Queen, I will be back.
1970s Edgeworth Aromatic (Red) in a light brown 1979 rusticated medium bend Italian Sir Jeffrey Dublin sitter with a flared top and yellow stem with a black vulcanite stem.
Part way through this bowl of Peretti’s D-9575 in a three quarter bend smooth 1985 Dunhill Chestnut 5202 with a cumberland stem.
I was nicely surprised by the accommodations and value. They're updated nicely and the staff was nice too.
2015 Gawith Hoggarth Louisiana Flake in a 1940s Barling Ye Olde Wood #1372, pencil shank, small, taper billiard smooth.
Smoking this tobacco in my flake pipes to compare, excellent in all so far. This pipe was a reclamation project, badly charred in the tobacco chamber but with careful smoking it's doing fine. The # is mismarked, the 1372 is normally a chubby billiard saddle. I overpaid at $64 but this fine smoker has made it a good buy.
In an English mood this evening so I'm smoking some Drew Estate Meat Pie in a MM Country Gentleman.
Part way through this bowl of 2012 Rolando’s Own in a 2002 black short shank grain relief straight Caminetto 6.L.17 tomato and a black acrylic stem. Starting to run low on this tin.
I enjoyed that first bowl of Meat Pie immensely so I packed another.
I picked up a fair amount of that but I don't care at all for the Lakeland scent in it. It was all I could taste. I jarred it up in a quart mason jar and put the lid disk on upside down so it doesn't seal. I've found that if I let a Lakeland scented tobacco slowly dry out and then rehydrate it, it takes a lot of that perfumey scent away. I've also got jars of Rum Flake and Bob's Chocolate Flake stored the same way. I check on them every couple of months to see how they're progressing.
Oh, almost forgot: I had a very small quantity of left-in-the-pipe Sam Gawith Chocolate Flake in a MM freehand this afternoon. Very nice blend with no Lakeland scent whatsoever that I can detect, but the mostly smoked, then over night sit didn't do it any favors... wasn't horrible, just wasn't very good.
FVF in a 2014 Savinelli Gaius smooth brown slight bend black acrylic stem and ferrule 320KS author. Starting to run low on my open stash.
Standard Tobacco Company of Pennsylvania War Horse Ready Cut in a 2015 smooth unfinished Savinelli 320KS author with a black vulcanite stem.
Now smoking Smoker’s Pride Natural in a 2002 smooth Rinaldo Silver Line 3 EGER 05 paneled horn. One of my favorite pipes. Watching a documentary about The Montreal Expos. In a clip where they showed men working on building the stadium, a guy is smoking a Bing.
Peretti’s Original in a 2002 IMP smooth full bend egg shaped meer with a black acrylic stem.
Had a very nice bowl of McClelland 2015 (from 2015). I find a rubout and a looser pack is best with this one.
Smoked in a Barling Regency Excel T.V.F. I received from @NeverBend .
Nice baccy in a nice pipe!
Stonehaven in a straight sandblasted black billiard 2013 PSF POY Kaywoodie with an amber colored lucite stem. A bottle of Orange Nehi made with pure cane sugar is my drink.
Hi Bill,
The Lakeland essence seems to differ smoker to smoker. G&H Brown Flake has too much for me but SG 1792 doesn't.
I like all my flakes, but especially Gawith Hoggarth, to have moisture where it makes the flavors pop, so I never dry them. My chunk of Louisiana Flake just awakened from its vacuum sleep is at an excellent rh now but I'll need to humidify it or it will become more dry than I like it.
Speaking of that 2015 Gawith Hoggarth Louisiana Flake and its current optimal rh, I'm about to smoke some in a 1950s Barling's Make Ye Olde Wood #251 (smooth) taper billiard.
Peterson's Connies Choice in a Satin Grain. I really like this aromatic blend, as it's not one of those overpowering ones that make you feel like you're smoking chocolate éclair's, cinnamon rolls, caramel, coffee beans and Twinkies at the same time......

Now smoking the best durn tobacco made today: Strang in a 2003 smooth medium bent straight grain Ardor Venere Extra signed by Dorelio Rovera Dublin with a black acrylic stem.
I've had the pipe for a long time, but I don't smoke it as much as I ought to. It has a big bowl, so it can only be clenched for so long. Your 1930 Barling sounds great. I wish those pre-transitions weren't so expensive, because I'd like to have a smooth straight pot.
Hearth & Home Classic Burley Kake in an Italian Rhodesian
Some left over mix Tobias sent me about a year ago in the country gent. Dunno what's in it but man it's good
About half way through this bowl of Jim's VaPer in a 2014 smooth medium bend Basil Meadows egg with an aluminum band and a "root beer swirl" acrylic stem. Listening to Vin Scully for three innings on the XM.
Upshall made some large pipes, used great wood too. We'll be going with Kennedy to the old Upshall workshop in Tilshead just to have a look.
Actually, I think Barling, post-WWII made their best pipes. I believe that your Barling #249 is from this period. The Algerian Civil War (1954) closed the Barling owned saw mill. Barling was unique in owning their own mill, thus controlling their briar supply as well as having a proprietary formula for rod vulcanite from NY Hamburger (Dunhill had their own formula). I've always said that Barling controlled their materials and production, 'From ground to mouth'.
When the Algerian briar was no longer available, Barling turned to Otto Braun who kept them supplied with top shelf briar (I believe mostly Greek). Aside from the tragedy of any civil war, the impact on Barling was negligible if any at all because the Algerian fields were depleted and the new sources were fresher.
Barling's shaping and consistency in process and manufacturing reached their peak in the 1950s. Their range of sizes grew to accommodate the American Market. The prices on the old Barlings can be prohibitive but their quality remained very high through early 1962 and in some cases a little later. Quality declined when they stopped hand making bowl and stem and further when they began to buy bowls from Charatan and Cadogan (GBD and Comoy), but even a later 1960s Barling is the equal of these brands.
I've bought some fine Barlings that were made after 1960 (when conventional wisdom incorrectly believed that they quality fell off the table) at some very reasonable prices, including the pipe below that has given me over 30 years of excellent smoking and it's every bit a classic Barling in quality.
2015 Gawith Hoggarth Louisiana Flake in a 1961 Barling's Make #5719, smooth saddle billiard with Diet Pepsi on a cool but clear night.
Just finished smoking MacBaren Symphony in a very ugly reddish color 1980 medium bend Lorenzo Leganza Sigma 8635 etched rough top.
