Try it folded and stuffed. Keep the flakes as intact as possible and dry the tobacco out good. I find 1792 a little too harsh for my taste rubbed out, and it doesn't rub out good either - just turns to dust and splinters no matter if it's wet or dry when I try. Folded and stuffed tho, it's far more mellow and creamy. Still doesn't like to burn. Bring lots of matches.
I'm of the opinion that all flakes should be kept as in tact as possible.
I realize the Gawith stuff needs substantially more drying time than others in order to accomplish this.
If I want it rubbed out, I'll just buy a ribbon cut.
But, to each his own.

As you say, to each his own. I cut all of my flake tobacco into smallish squares. Larger squares for my conventional briars (so the tobacco doesn't get sucked into my mouth). Smaller squares for my Kirsten (impossible for that to happen with that pipe).

I have tried the cube cut method and like it better than rubbing it out.
The SG Full Virginia Flake I'm smoking right now is actually cube cut. Several months ago when I was experimenting with the method I cube cut an entire tin of FVF and jarred it up. I'm about halfway through it.
I may slightly prefer it prepared differently now, but it is one of my favorite tobaccos and it is still being enjoyed thoroughly.
And I would certainly never tell another man how to enjoy his tobacco.

+1 for cube cuts. I often cube up a flake to fit in my little Sav. The bowl is really too small for a decent fold n stuff and cube cutting yields similar results.

Sample #7 today in a Brigham brandy pot. Pouch note reminds me
of chocolate covered raisins. Just a guess, I think this is one of the
plum varieties.

Puffing Dunhill Flake in my venerable Kirsten. This stuff rises up on first light more than any other tobacco that I know of. Fill your pipe a little bit too much and it'll climb right out of the pipe and into your lap!

Louisiana Perique in a cob. Don't know what brand it is, but I'm pretty sure it's not Louisiana.

Had some McClelland 2015 Virginia Flake with Perique earlier today in a sandblast Savinelli Bing's Favorite.
Finished the evening off with some SG Navy Flake in an old banded Dr. Grabow.
