Sounds like it's just getting broken in if the bit of birch shank pokin' into the bowl is burnt away! The cracked shanks are a pickle though. I usually pry apart, and fill with wood glue, and cross my fingers.

Well, it's a cob and I buy them in bags of 10, (rejects), and there are plenty more here to take it's place. If it was a briar I might have taken more heroic measures to save it, but the bowl was wobbly on what was left of the end of the shank, and with the crack too, it was just time to put it down.
