Ok it's time to give the pipe another try. I picked up a non-aro english type house blend from a local B&M. Getting better. Bowl stayed lit (most of the time). And had only minor tongue bite.

Most folks know that San Diego has a mild climate. But in addition to that, there are few flies or mosquitos. Not much SMOG either – at least where my home is. Also, no tornadoes or hurricanes, and seldom even strong winds.
