Having a bowl of Samuel Gawith 1792 Flake in my pre-Republic Peterson Shamrock.
I've figured this tobacco out I think. As soon as I got the tin I rubbed out a flake, let it set for a couple hours and smoked it. I didn't enjoy it that much. The tonquin flavor was too strong and overpowered the blend IMO.
Because SG tobaccos nearly always come pretty darn wet, I just let it in the tin and forgot about it for a month. Tonight I decided to try it again. The moisture content is much better, nearly perfect in fact. And the tonquin flavor has mellowed out a lot.
I'm enjoying it this time. I think it just needs some time to breath. I've heard a year really does wonders to it.

Somehow the whole family is here this morning. I'm on the deck writing to you while my daughter-in-law is writing something much more scholarly.

Hi Jim,
Do you find yourself making mental comparisons and perhaps thinking that one mixture is perhaps the same as another? Or at least very similar and probably from the same manufacturer?
I tried a flake blind and was sure that it was Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake but it was Comoy Cask #4 that I now believe to be the same. I'm just not familiar with enough current offerings but when I had my store this was a natural process for me.

Had some Stokkebye's Toasted Burley earlier, in a mini meer. The PS was one of those speculative purchases - when I order pipe tobacco I usually get an ounce of something I haven't tried before. It wasn't bad but I won't be inventing a new religion around it. Very smooth, burned well, but the flavor was just ... tobacco. Might try to add something to kick up the flavor next time.
I suspect that this is very common in the market but I haven't tried enough current blends to get an idea of the canvas.
Your comments perfectly state what I presume the market to be, an extension of the 'old time tobacconist' (like me ;/) mixtures that are looking to gain a larger audience. It's a lot easier today than it was in the 1980s but it will make for a lot of repetition.
I'm going to start a thread on the topic.

This pipe's a good smoker but refuses to be better than that. Its walls are too thick for me to have confidence in it as a latakia smoker.
Kaiden and I transplanted some flowers and peppers to the new garden to see how they do as a guide for next year. She supervised the clean-up.

Still enjoying the great bowl of Bright CR in the Ser Jacopo (posted earlier) so I'm posting early as I fill in preparation for another Mock NFL Fantasy Draft
