In general, I find smaller, compact bowl sizes make the best flake pipes.
Still on the fence on shape though, I think smaller billiards and bulldogs seem to get the job done right....but I also have a couple pot shapes that are smaller and make mean little flake smokers...
More research needed to find out I suppose.
I bought 7 pre Berlin Wall pipes from Germany in an auction several months ago. 4 of those were German made Howal pipes. There's one in particular that I enjoy the most as it has a small bowl and it's great for a quick smoke. It's a very solid pipe with thick walls and now that I've smoked it many times, I would've paid the same for that pipe as I paid for the seven together. It's just a pipe that feels "like home".....
This one is an apple or prince shape - not sure which - with a slight bend. The bowl is quite small - maybe 5/8" diameter and a little better than 3/4" deep (can't measure it, it's full of chunks of Black Cherry and Sweet Rum twist) but there's nothing quick about that little bowl full of G&H rope. I get an hour out of it easy.
I was under the impression that chimney shapes were good for flakes.
I have the Imperial 2 Point from @NeverBend . It's got a tall, narrow bowl - little over 5/8" diameter x ~ 1 1/2" deep - and it's great for flake of medium strength or so but I think it would kill me to smoke that bowl full of rope :pipe:
The little Sav is back in service again with a mixture of Sweet Rum and Black Cherry Twist :D
