True Derelict
All right. Here we go.
BryGuy reviews "The Professor."
Smoked right out of the bag, in a Savinelli Roma.
The Professor is a uniformly dark and leathery-looking tobacco; on the chunky side.
The initial light is sweet and smokey. The sweetness is something I can almost feel like a texture on my tongue - a nice way to start a smoke.
Immediately after the initial light, a floral note comes through, and it is not bashful.
There is also a nice smokiness that plays a background note through the entire smoke.
The floral aspect takes on a soapy aspect, reminiscent of the Lakelands. It reminds me a little bit of the little flower soaps that people have as decorations in their bathrooms.
I tried the "freight train test." Under hard puffing, the pipe got hot, but there was no bite.
The second half of the bowl toned down the floral taste, but retained a very pleasant-smelling smoke. A slight spiciness became present on my lips, but was not unpleasant.
By the end of the bowl, everything had come together and provided a great and tasty smoke. Not my normal fare, but quite nice.

BryGuy reviews "Einstein 2."
Smoked right out of the bag, in a Savinelli Roma.
Mostly dark and leathery, with medium-brown strands mixed in.
Initial light brings the floral soap fragrance of The Professor, but with an earthy nuttiness riding alongside.
This "nuttiness" reminds me of pecan shells and the layer of bark that builds up at the bottom of an old wood pile. It isn't strong, but it is there.
As the smoke progresses, the floral note takes over the retrohale.
This smoke is a little more "drying" on my soft palate, as burley tends to do to me.
A slight gurgle pops up, but that is normal for me; especially since this is a half-bent pipe (sorry, Pete!)
The middle of the smoke turns mellow, and I find I'm puffing more to find the flavors. A quick ash dump, tamp, and relight liven things back up.
The floral smell in the smoke is back. I think it is a nice room note.
The nuttiness reminds me of nut shells, but not the nut meat.
The burley tingle is creeping around my mouth. I don't say this as a negative for the mixture, just how I react to burley.
But I do think I prefer The Professor over Einstein; just a little.

@NeverBend
, I've been out of the loop, having been super-busy this Summer, so I didn't catch this thread at the beginning. Have I missed the opportunity to try your blends, or is the offer still open? I like Cav/Lat blends, so I'd be very interested in your mixtures.

Had a chance to smoke both the Thomas Hariot and the Einstein back-to-back a couple of days ago. Two bowls in a row is something I've never done, but I'm sure it's not the best way to try a new blend. I enjoyed both very much. The Thomas Hariot was lighter than expected, but also rich. Hard to describe - I found the latakia to be fairly light, and there was a citrusy, grassy flavor to the blend and maybe a little honey. It burned well, was easy to smoke, and surprisingly quickly to a fine ash, though a little hot on occasion. Flavors were consistent all the way through, and it was very enjoyable. It smoked best for me with frequent light puffing.
I feel I can't comment fairly on the Einstein since it was right after the Hariot, though from the small bowl I had it's so far my least favorite of the three blends. While similar to the Professor, I found it lacked some of the richness and complexity of the Prof. I didn't get the floral notes, and the vanilla wasn't as prominent. It also had a little bite and I really had to slow down. I did enjoy it, and it was like desert after the Thomas Hariot main course, but I think the Prof is a hard act to follow and this blend suffers only in comparison. Interesting to note that the Professor was designed partly with the newer pipe smoker in mind, and since I am a new smoker it looks like Pete hit the nail on the head with that one. Looking forward to trying Einstein with a clean palate next time.
