Is there a thread giving pointers on what to look for when buying a pipe, especially a used pipe? I couldn't find one. If it's here, I'd love to know where. If not, there are a lot of experienced pipers here that have a wealth of knowledge. Very interested in seeing a thread on this, whether an old thread or a new one.
Happy as if I had good sense.

    Hi George,

I said that I'd write something up for you many months ago and never did. My apologies. I started a couple of threads in hopes of making that up to you.

I had access and opportunity but I never did....but someone did! This is the pipe that I was meant to own, the Siegel's Make pipe! (that's my last name).

Yes, I know that it's throughly unimpressive but I couldn't pass it up. My wife was really stoked about me getting this one.

Good catch, Pete! I can empathize with buying a pipe because it speaks to you on some level other than its monetary worth.

Nice spread! What's in the bag? I see some jars in the background.

In the bag LJ Peretti Cuban Mixture. The jars are 2011 Stonehaven, Old Joe Kranz, and @Pugsley 's "Freight Train". Basically my open stuff right now.

Just received this damaged pipe with bowl nomenclature virtually all buffed off. Certainly the smoker before me loved it based on the use and bowl cake. It reamed close to circular and is clean (no fills) with nice flame grain and it was handmade. Rim is beat to hell and the shank was repaired but it's surprising that a handmade pipe with a 1920-30 style Four Dot stem received only my $5.00 bid (+$5.95 shipping).

I took off the wax finish, cleaned the nomenclature area, put on some carbon and was able to make out the tail of the old fishtail logo and part of the 'S' from Sasieni. It would appear that that it's a beat up, small and odd shaped 1920s Sasieni. Always wanted to try one of their really early pipes.
