Some good news, and some bad news about my latest pipe purchase:

    https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/e...duct_id=273743

The bad: I noticed that the bit angles off about 3 degrees to the side from the shank. Wouldn’t hinder smokeability, but it’s a cosmetic defect that annoys me.

The good: I noticed the defect before I smoked it. I can return the pipe, and will do so.

Got an email notification that this was back in stock at Smokingpipes.
That's good news. With McClelland going under, it's time to re-visit my old friend. This was my favorite Virginia, and I guess it is again.

I bought this Mark Tinsky estate pipe (unsmoked) recently:

    https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/n...duct_id=262439

I haven’t seen many Tinsky pipes that suit me, but this compact (5.2”), hunky (1.71oz) fellow is just right for a holder like me. Thick bowl walls that’ll stay cool, straight, low-maintenance acrylic bit, right size. Looks good in my eyes, and it’s a stable sitter, too.

An interesting shank — generally rectangular in cross section: flat sides, slightly convex top & bottom. The light band with thin dark stripes is palm wood. Tinsky often uses it so for a contrast element, and I like the look. Grechukhin, a Russian pipe maker, uses it too, in exactly the same way.

I didn’t buy the pipe from the link above, but used that link because it has a top view. The SmokingPipes American Estates link that I bought it from has only side views, because of the lower price.

I don’t really need this pipe, and it might be awhile before I smoke it, but it was too good of a deal to pass up. Very glad that I scored it.

    Not a whole lot recently.
Picked up a 100g tin of Doblone d'Oro, Rattray's Marlin Flake and Old Gowrie.
Also found a M&T Dundee pipe in the antique mall. It's in pretty good condition. I'll try to upload a pic later.

After being “Currently out of stock” FOR EV ER at SmokingPipes, Hamborger Veermaster is finally available again. I just ordered 20 50g tins. It’s the mildest straight Virginia that I know of. Tasty too.

Doug, does a Virginia that mild change much with age? Or does the strength not matter very much when it comes to aging?

I don’t know. The tin of HV that I have open now is only 7 months old. Currently, I have only four more tins on hand, all the same age. HV is so mild that I doubt that age could make it any milder. Might richen the flavor though.

I see that it’s “Currently out of stock“, again, at SmokingPipes. Glad that I got my 20-tin order placed while they still had that many. Good tobacco seems to be getting scarce these days.

Went to a huge flea market today with the wife. Left with a few old tins for my collection and two pipes that need a light restoration. One is a no name Italian Briar and the other is a Wally Frank Well pipe. For $5 each I figured I could not lose.

Nice score! Those pipes are really nice and the price was low.

That was my thought. I have wanted to try bringing some estates back to life and it seemed to be a good starting point. The one needs some work on the stem to determine why it won't seat properly but otherwise they just need a good reaming, sanitizing and removing some minor stem oxidation.

Who knows, I may end up liking the process and seek out some more to keep me occupied this winter.
