    I bought a used Italian pipe on SmokingPipes.com this evening. It has ALL of the characteristics that I've been looking for:

    * Good condition (4.95/5, lightly smoked).
    * My favorite shape (squat bulldog).
    * Smooth finish with darkish color, decent grain.
    * Straight stem.
    * Broad (0.83"), shallow (1.20") chamber.
    * Thick bowl walls.
    * Straight-up bowl (no forward cant).
    * Acrylic bit.
    * Good weight (1.5 oz).
    * Respected maker (Luciano).

    I don't have the time and patience to maintain vulcanite bits. And, since I'm a holder, vulcanite bits have no benefit for me. It's as though Luciano made this pipe just for me!

    Finally (after 3 years) found some SG Kendal Plug at Smokingpipes.com last week and bought some for the cellar.

    Placed an order at Pipes & Cigars during customer appreciation week and got the "Goody Bag". Here's what I got; the second photo is the goody bag.
    That's a pound of Lane Burley Light without a Bite in the upper left.

    Then the goody bag (included a Drew Estate Missouri Meerschaum):

    Just signed up for ebay this week with the intention of looking at pipes. After much frustration (being outbid at the last possible second) I got an idea of what to do and won my first auction today.
    It is a pipe stand with 4 pipes.

    I got it cheap, and mainly for the stand. So if any of the pipes are worth smoking at all it will be merely a bonus.

    I'll post up pics when it gets here.

    IDK what you do but I don't mess with bidding up stuff in little increments. Ebay does that for you anyway. Just put in the max amount you're willing to pay and then forget about it - it doesn't necessarily mean that's what you'll end up paying. I've put in a bid for 80 bucks on an item with a week left to go that had something like $7.50 listed as the current bid and ended up winning it for something like $48.00

    The Luciano squat bulldog arrived today. I was surprised; delivery was scheduled for tomorrow, and I didn't know that the USPS delivered on national holidays. There was another surprise too; SmokingPipes said that the condition of this pipe was "4.95/5, lightly smoked". In fact, its condition is 5/5, unsmoked. Very pleased about that!

    Luciano pipes are said to be machine made, but hand finished. In any case, this pipe is very nicely made and finished. The borings (chamber, draft, and mortise) are excellent - perfectly positioned and crisp with not the least chipping.

    This pipe has the thickest bowl walls of any pipe that I've ever owned. That's a blessing for a holder like me - it means a nice cool pipe in hand, even on hot days.

    I think I'm going to like this pipe, but it'll be a few days before I smoke it. I like to admire a new pipe in its pristine condition for awhile, and to get a few measurements; notably, weight and chamber dimensions.

    I've always liked the Canadian style pipe with the long shank and short bit.

    I just got my first one. It will be here early next week and I'll post up pics.

    Congrats! I hope you like it. I like the similar Lumberman style even better. It has a short saddle bit whereas a Canadian has a short tapered bit. I don't have a Lumberman, but I do have a Lumberpot (Lumberman stem and Pot bowl). I like broad, shallow chambers with thick bowl walls.

    Had some pipe stock from P&C's customer appreciation sale arrive today, graciously repacked and forwarded by Hardheaded, thanks again.
    Stuff on the left (pipe, bag, cleaners, tamp, bracelet and 3 tins) was their customer appreciation gift. Then a couple packs of pipe cleaners, a can of Molto Dolce, peterson wild atlantic, some 1-Q, LBF and meat candy. Also figured I'd try cellaring some golden slice and erinmore.

    Pipe cabinet is full for now. Now I need to restock the wineador.

    Got all of this for $12.50.
    I was mainly wanting the rack. Turns out the pipes look pretty good.
    The two straight ones are a brand I've never heard of. They both say "Goldenaire" and under that "Imported briar". The band says the words "Gold filled".
    They both actually smoke pretty well.

    The bent one says "Ansell's" Washington DC
    A little research showed that Ansells was a pipe and tobacco shop there in DC many years ago. I couldn't find anything about who actually made the pipe. I've only smoked it once so not quite enough to form an opinion.

    The goofy one with the carved head says "RealBriar" Made in France.
    Haven't tried smoking it. May not. I see it as mainly a novelty.

    Anyway, I'm happy for the money spent.
