I'm talking about your tastes over time of course. I think back on blends that I didn't like the first time I tried them and how I like them now.

I even started a thread a few months back on what blends didn't live up to the hype. At first I had Peterson Irish Flake in that category. I just flat didn't care for it when I first tried it, but by the time I got through that first tin, I enjoyed it very much.

Now that tobacco is SPC Mississippi River. I picked up a tin because everybody seemed to love the stuff and I'm just underwhelmed. I thought at first that I had just smoked it too soon after opening the tin, so I tried the next day after letting it breath and still couldn't see what the fuss was about. Then I thought maybe it just came too moist so I dried some out for a couple hours.............still aint feeling it. It just tastes bland to me. I don't get much flavor out of it at all.

So I've decided to just stick this jar in the cellar and come back to it in a year or so and see if my tastes have changed again.

I imagine this is normal though.

I had the same thing with Carter Hall. Bought it with my first pipe because its great for breaking in but absolutely hated the stuff. Found it had no flavor and was terrible. Now I actually really enjoy it. Looking back it was probably just as much inexperience as it was taste change but I've come full circle on it. Learned never to get rid of something I don't care for at first as I my love it later.

I just jar and put away. Have found some that I disliked a few years ago are really good now. Crazy.

I don't enjoy a good measure of the things I started off smoking, but a decent amount have endured as well. I think, more than anything, I have become more moody with my smoking. In other words, I get in the "mood" for something, rather than just being satisfied with shoving whatever is handy into a pipe (even if it is a blend I enjoy)

I was unsure about this one, but ended up liking it.
Experiment with packing, smoke it like a virginia.
I didn't really like it in a cob. It was much better in a good briar.

I agree with Tobias, though. A big part of it what you are in the mood for.

I've had that experience too. Several years ago I bought five tins of F&T Cut Virginia Plug. After two tins I didn't like it at all – had a "minty" flavor that put me off. But a couple of years later I opened a third tin – and loved it. Can't understand why I ever thought it tasted minty. Now it's my favorite topped Virginia – mild, tasty, and has a scrumptious tin note. Good for social situations too – everybody likes the room note.

I was pretty much not smoking aromatics unless my wife asked me to smoke one of good smelling ones. After the Milan Tobacconist stuff, I found myself with a pipe in my mouth all day yesterday and all had an aromatic in them. It is weird how our tastes can change from day to day, and sometimes hour to hour....

Same thing with me in the case of Lakeland tobaccos. Before, I was not interested in them because of what I had read. But now I keep some at my desk ready to smoke.

That's the best strategy. They say that people's tastes completely change every 7 years. While there will always be pleasures that are timeless for you, each year opens up doors to awesome new tastes!
