I thought that too but don't think about it as one stem for your single 9 dollar cob. It's a way better stem that will go on ALL your cobs...I don't know about you but my cobs combined add up to a lot more than 9 bucks and my stem goes great on all of them... fixes the loose open draw too, which is what I hated most about smoking a cob.

I love cobs too. In fact, my Briar pipes have been a little neglected lately.

I have smoked the large & the small Old Dominion pipes. The middle sized one is still new. Of the two I have smoked, I have smoked them a lot without burnout. On the large pipe, I did burn off the shank and had to sand it a bit to stuff it back in the cob. They don't glue in the reed shanks, just sand or file down a bit and stuff it in.

If the cob burns out, who cares. They're cheap. At least mine are. Those in the OP don't look too cheap.
Ditto. And I tap them on the ashtray when emptying them. Would never do that with a briar or meer.
I've bought a couple of the 10-packs of MM seconds; still have most of them. I keep a number of them unsmoked for guests and newbie starter kits (cob, wooden golf tee, pipe cleaners, stick matches, and tobacco samples).

Back to back bowls often in cobs. As said, they are cheap.
The only ones that I have that really are not cheap are the R.Santia cobs. The bone rings along each were a bit more than a 10 pipe grab bag.
I got the old ones on ebay cheap, and the bamboo shanks didn't cost a lot neither did the stems.

Eventually you'll want to get a proper tamper/scraper tool, but a wooden golf tee will do in a pinch I got that idea from a Pufferette who does not seem to have found her way to the new site.

I use a golf tee from time to time too. It is the only thing that seems to fit in the little Old Dominion pipe. All my other tampers are just a slight bit too large.

I started with a golf tee. I never did switch to a proper tamper until one was included with a batch of estates I purchased.

I use a golf tee all the time when I am on the course. Works great.
Why bother digging around for a tamp when I have tees all over my pockets?
