    Cigar tobacco in pipes?

As you may know, I smoke cigars. Never smoked a pipe. As you may also know, I roll some of my own cigars.

So, I'm thinking about getting a pipe to smoke the scraps left over from rolling cigars. I've used them to make short filler cigars, but the results are less than stellar, but I hate to throw away perfectly yummy tobacco.

Good idea? Bad idea? Crazy idea?

    Thanks!

Well it SOUNDS like a great idea but I've smoked cigar pieces in a pipe several times and never did like it. I wanted to like it but... It seems to want to bite for some reason and never tastes all that good. But of course you'll probably be smoking the legendary Guten tobacco so your mileage may vary.

However, you absolutely SHOULD get a pipe anyway. Just so you can see for yourself. Just add a few ounces of decent pipe tobacco to the order. If you can find some G&H Brown Twist Sliced in stock, that's a very cigary tasting blend. I just burned a bowl last night. Probably not the best for a pipe n00b tho, it's a seriously strong blend and it requires some very slow sipping to get the flavor out of it. There are myriad of blends out there tho for when you give up on the cigar scraps.

That reminds me - I have a sample of the Gutencalabergs' latest offering. I'll have to smoke it sometime soon and let you know what it's like.

Been doing this for decades with cigars that I'll finish in a pipe.

I guess I'll have to give it a try. Don't know when it'll happen - not before my grand jury stint ends in February. That has just screwed up my schedule so I don't have much free time.

Let me know when you get sick of fooling with nasty cigar scraps. I have plenty of stock to send a few decent samples of something good.

OK - Black Friday got me. My pipe is on the way. I'm calling it a Christmas present, so I won't send pics until it's officially mine.

The problem is that with cigars all the flavor is in the wrapper. The scraps of filler wont deliver the promise of
a good pipe blend.Try mixing with some overly moist pipe blends,I'll have to leave specific suggestions to some
    one more knowledgable.

I think the flavor contribution of the wrapper is more about construction of the cigar than concentration of flavor in the leaf. I've rolled cigars with different innards and same wrappers, and the flavor is quite different. I even rolled one "inside out" once - added wrapper to the filler and took two filler leaves to use at binder and wrapper. Tasted noticeably different from one rolled the usual way.

But - we'll see how this works. The point isn't as much to start smoking a pipe as it is to use and enjoy the scraps left from rolling cigars. I don't plan to start buying more tobaccos just so I can use the pipe. If this doesn't work, the pipe will be a decoration in my office.
