Why You Need to Cellar Tobacco

I've possibly smoked as much aged (and super-aged) tobacco as anyone but I don't give a whit about ageing and yet I've been buying tobacco like it's going out of style. It IS going out of style. What are the reasons that you need to cellar tobacco. Your input is solicited.

1. Quality.
2. Taxation.
3. Price increases.
4. Availability.
5. Investment.

1 - The quality of leaf available for pipe tobaccos has been in decline for many years. Traditional sources have evaporated. Fewer acres dedicated to growing leaf suitable for pipe tobacco. Blenders are dong wonderful things but there will be a point when they can't make a purse out of a sow's ear.

2 - Taxation is already here and will only go up. It's not about saving you, or kids, it's about trying to balance budgets, period.

3 - Price increases are inevitable, even if taxes don't increase.

4 - Some states have already created legislation against shipping tobacco into the state. It's probable that this legislation will spread and doubtful that it will be repealed.

5 - There is a growing market for older tobacco.

Add up all the benefits to buying tobacco now and storing it and you realize that it's a prudent move. Tins cost more but will sell more readily but bulk will have residual value as well. If you smoke it and like it then you should be storing it to the best of your means.

Yeah, you can age the stuff if you like.

When I move back to the states I will hit the proverbial ground firing on all cylinders. Living in Japan for all these years has made it difficult to say the least for TAD. I will absolutely be taking that free shipping that many sites offer and this thread will be my Declaration of Acquisition.

I think the near certainty of tax increases is the most compelling reason to stock up. As pipe smokers, we've been lucky that our tobacco is not taxed as heavily as cigarette tobacco, but that won't last. I've never been one to buy bulk tobacco and cellar it, almost all my tobacco is in tins. But with the noises coming out of the various state legislatures around the country, I'm giving serious thought to laying a few pounds of my favorites aside and stocking up on tubs of Carter Hall.

Good News!

If the bags have sealed nicely, you should never have a problem in the future. However, If you have any serious concerns, you can double seal each bag by manually placing the bag on the sealing/heating element, about a 1/4" forward of the original seal and then just use the sealing feature to create a second seal, about a 1/4" from the 1st seal.

There have been several "shots across the bow" aimed at pipe smokers. Tax increases, laws against public smoking, the list goes on. Good reasons to stock the larder.

Yet, I really started aging to take the perceived edge off of a tobacco I liked. MacBaren Vanilla flake had a bit of a sharpness that settled down with a few years of aging. Now, I do it for all of my tins.

I'm sealing some with vacuum and some without based on how moist they are going in and time before expected use.. Thanks for the tip on the double sealing. The Nesco machine seems to work great and I'll buy the jar attachment (same as Food Saver I believe) for masons. I'm indebted to you and I'll let you know anything of note but I'll be happy to live long enough to make any meaningful discoveries.
