Indeed. I try (key word there is try) to only drink water or tea while smoking pipes. Nothing fights tongue bite like good ol' H2O. Of course I also drink a lot of coffee with my pipes, especially burley.
Oh, and I guess sometimes (lots of times) I drink some beer with my pipes

This in spades! I've been a runner for a number of years now (through ultra distances) and I've noticed a direct correlation between my hydration and my susceptibility to tongue bite (and in my case, bite on the roof of my mouth). If I spend all weekend logging miles and sucking down too much coffee to stay awake and study, I'll bite myself hard with the most gentle blend on Monday morning.
