Impressions of Yellow "K" (Vac) GH Glengary Flake

A handful of flakes came vacuum packed and at first thought the packaging to be unnecessary. But now that I have procrastinated this long I am happy these little guys were frozen in time. Upon opening the bag, my nose told me of another reason for this vacuum sealing...the Essence. While not heavily laden with the sauce, I can tell it was made in the same factory as the famous Ennerdale.
Judging by the cut and smell I can say quite confidently that these come from Gawith & Hoggarth. I let a flake dry for about 45 minutes until just barely pliable without crumbling. Folded it, gave it a good thorough rub and then swirled it into a Savinelli 920 ks. I enjoyed this smoke indoors. A match reveals a smooth, mild, fragrant, creamy smoke. Delicious virginias and a smell reminiscent of sandalwood and Lakeland. The smoke is quite cool, even when pushed, and remains sweet throughout the entire bowl. the flavor stayed true and did not change drastically as I progressed through this experience. The sweetness stayed with an oh so slight WHISPER of tang about it, the Virginia grew in depth and developed a more spicy character, and the lovely fragrance wafted about the room as a bulwark to the rich tasty smoke reminding me of its origin.
Lovely smoke, absolutely delicious, and always recommended. I'd be so bold as to say I was smoking Scotch Flake, one of my favorites.

Oh man! They are so similar! It was just like Scotch Flake only less intense...I figured that aged had just mellowed it out.

Well I just opened Green "J" (vac) and hot damn! This one smells like chocolate so I'm thinking Bob's or Scotch Aromatic....but guessing isn't the point. I'll be back later to tell how she smokes! Smells great! Can't wait.

Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I qualified for the win based on reviews. Or maybe it was a random drawing, in my case. JustTroItIn and I won a Barling pipe courtesy of NeverBend. The pipe arrived today and man, is it sweet. It's a 5579 with a long shank. This form is new to me and I find it to be very elegant in person. This whole review/bombing run was entertaining and edifying from start to finish. Capping it off with a pipe prize is just classy as hell. Thanks Pete and Tobias and all the participants!

Ahh, I had that one too. Absolutely delicious Va flake. I can see next time we haul scrap around here I'm going to have to put up some Glengary to hoard for a rainy day... or for a rainy year if scrap prices are up

Pete hit me with a beautiful pipe! It arrived in the mail yesterday afternoon. It is a mid-1960s Brandy-shaped, Family Era Barling. I plan on giving it a go tomorrow afternoon. Here are some pics. This easily becomes the oldest pipe in my collection (the previous being from 1983):

Thanks so much for hosting the contest, and the generous "payment" for the little time I invested compared to you.

Ok, so I am finally done with school for the year! I've got several tobaccos that need to be reviewed and I'll be getting on that this week! Tonight I had to review an OTC that came first. Anyway, congrats to the winners! Those are gorgeous pipes! I'm looking forward to trying the other samples in my box! Too much Vitamin N for one night! I'm heading to bed. Later days everyone!

Came home today to a wonderful surprise in my mailbox. Pete sent me a gorgeous Barling Rallye 5579 Lumberman. Thank you, Pete. I will smoke this pipe with pride. I was curious if you had a rough estimate as to the year?
