Ah! Well, that explains it. Growing up, we were too poor to be able to afford coal. We had to rely on lighting daddy's "natural gas." Thank God he was a big bean eater!

It's only a guess but I'm thinking it made it easier for the coal to slide out.

Actually, if I understand what I have been reading, what we have here is a Scuttle, which is commonly used to hold or store small amount of coal. The Scoop part of this, is actually a small metal, shovel looking thing. They go together.
Of all the things I have lost in my lifetime, I miss my MIND the most!
