By 1982 my wife covered my store more than anyone and she was (remains) trusting of everyone. I didn't smoke a lot of Macs because they were too dear for a poor tobacconist but we were going through a lot of Prince Philips (~$2.00 in those days :)) but no one remembered selling them except a few to an older man (~70) who only chewed them (like chaw, into a horrible looking sticky and soaking mess). This guy wore enough jewelry to make Tiffanys blush.
One day he paid for a single cigar but he'd pocketed 6 more and I caught him red-handed. I held him and called Mall Security. He was stunned when I wanted to press charges (I later estimated that he'd stolen at least 500 cigars over a couple of years). He opened a wallet stuffed with hundred dollar bills (1982) and threw three at me. I took the money, told security to let him go and never saw him again.
