Bummin' Around
Is This The End For Oliva?
Hadnt heard about this until today, old news but it clearly cant be good for the long term.
Oliva Cigar Acquired by European Cigar Company | News & Features
General, Altadis etc. are famous for smiting quality product from boutique manufacturers with relative ease. Though I certainly wouldnt call Oliva boutique, I dont see how this could be a good thing.

I had seen this "reported" elsewhere but never saw a confirmation of it. Not only potentially bad for Oliva itself but they grow, process and supply tobacco for tons of other manufacturers.

This is the wave of the future for cigars. As additional regulatory hurdles are looming, viable companies with perceived value are ripe for acquisition as they look to combine resources or as a way to still capitalize while they can.
It sounds as though the Oliva family plans to remain involved in the operations. Time will tell how much influence they will continue to have or how independent the Oliva side remains. Oliva and the Studio Tobac Nub line were some of the first "premium" cigars I had that got me started down this path. I still enjoy several of their cigars, but I have to wonder at some of the new lines in recent years that seem a bit gimmicky, like the infused NUb Cafe (now Nuance). And a pumpkin spice cigar? c'mon! I can't even do that in a latte.

I'm pretty sure the Oliva whole leaf distributors are a different Oliva family from the cigar brand.

Upon further investigation, you are quite correct! There is an Oliva Cigar Co and an Oliva Tobacco Co. I always assumed they were the same. Thanks for the correction, Bruce!

Yeah, Oliva Tobacco Co makes the Latitude Zero, which is also a fine cigar.
