Newb question on Box Splits
I see there is a section in here for WTT/WTB and Box Splits. From what I looked at (very briefly) it looks like the Box Split is mostly used for higher priced cigars. Does anyone use it to split less expensive boxes? Say a person wanted to buy a box of something that they were able to grab for a price point around $4/ stick but doesn't want to spend the $100 for a box of 25. Does anyone ever do splits on those types of boxes or do most people consider that a waste of time at that price point?
The reason I am asking is that there are often good deals to be had on auction sites if you are willing to spend $80-$120 on boxes of 20/25. But I don't need 25 of any one cigar at that price point and its tough to get the same level of deal for 5 packs or singles of the same sticks. I'd rather spread my limited cigar budget around on a variety of sticks but would like to take advantage of those price points. Just curious.
Thanks much.

There is no price range limitations for box splits.
Anything is welcome.
Post it up and see what interest you get.

My experience a box split is for cigars several people may want to try but no one wants to commit to a full box of. Many times that can be a more expensive stick or a stick that maybe is harder for some to get access to for whatever reason. But when considering a box split maybe you can get the box for $100 for 20 and you only want the 5er. So that means you can offer 3 5ers for $25 plus shipping the shipping is what screws over cheaper box splits. Small flat rate is basically $8.50 now. So that moves your $5 cigar into a $6.70 cigar. So if the cigars is a great deal at $5 is it still a good enough deal for someone at potentially $6.70 or is it a $7 cigar they can walk into a B&M and purchase without the mail time?
My experience is thats where most of us even those with smaller budgets either get the 5pk to see if you like it or more storage on the stuff you enjoy if you can get the deal.
Just my 2 cents

Totally makes sense. Unfortunately I don't have a good idea of what you can get at a local B&M because I don't have any within 60 miles of me so I order most of mine.
What I see on auction sites though are situations like a current deal where a box of 21 AJ Fernandez New World (Toro) went for $91 Pay $1 shipping if you have anything else already ordered for the week and that's a box of decent cars for $92. That's to my door at $4.39 / stick. Shipped to two partners doors in packs of 7 and they each and they are each looking at 7 sticks for under $40 shipped to their door. That would be 7 AJ Fernandez New World (Toro) for under $5.75/stick.
To me that is a good stick for that price point but I don't know what your B&M sells them for. I only can compare to online prices.

There are also some online retailer that offer a discount with a code to use. Also some retailers offer free shipping which is nice. smallbatchcigar also has Scotty's Corner where they reduce prices on certain cigars.
@Nature
or anyone else, does CigarBum still have any discounts from any of the retailers?
I agree with Josh, when you do a box split of 5'ers, shipping cigars to 3 pther people will cost $25 and jacks up the bargain.
Before you buy a box for a split, I suggest judging interest for that cigar before pulling the trigger.

Yep, the Bums have nailed it.
Shipping eats into budget sticks at a higher percentage rate, which further counters a bargain buy. (See below)
A few of the last ones I did were because of box size (50 count), rareness (bum sharing a score), Cost, or first time smoke.
That doesn't mean someone still won't do it, especially depending on the price you get.
Also, a lot of splits don't make it into that thread - they happen on the fly or in thread discussions.
Budget example - I grabbed a mazo (25) of San Cristobal Quintessence Robustos.l for about $128 w/tax. That puts me at about $5 a stick. If you want a fiver, I'll send one at no up charge for $35 (puts you at $7 a stick).
@chain_gang
just posted a Caldwell Lost&Found 5'er deal: $20 shipped - hard to beat that!

I dont know of any active cigarbum codes. I tend to google redit codes but a lot of them have expired over the last year.

Nice summing up on the way most of us on Cigarbum are likely to view box splits. The flat rates sure do play a part when the box split is on a widely available cigar medium price cigar.

Doesn't the small batch 10% code still work? Think I used it a while ago
