I received my Montecristo punch not long ago and noticed it was much larger than the one on my cheap lighter. Not a bad thing, but wouldn't work on small gauge sticks. It worked quite well on a 50 ring not long ago, but this time it seemed to have torn the wrapper a bit. Oh well, right? Later I noticed this:
This had been over humidified at about 73%, but at 70% for about a week. Not sure if I was just a bit of a barbarian or it if the moisture made any difference, but the gauge of the punch is a bit big I'd venture to say (being a bit naive here). Maybe I'm just not quite refined enough yet...
It did smoke well and I ingested no tobacco so it's all cosmetic. And I'm more for function than form I guess unless we are talking Backwoods (yes I've smoked them a few times, but I don't usually talk about that anymore!).

It may have as much to do with the biting and slobbering. I find this happens to me when I'm clenching while doing other things, such as working in the yard. I tend to salivate /drool more then, especially when I'm stooped over and the smoke gets in my face. I like your attitude of function over form. Smoking a cigar isn't a beauty contest!

Yeah, biting and slobbering will do that. I find that certain sticks for some reason make me salivate more than others, with an affect accordingly on the nub.
I see some people end up with nubs like that more often than others, though. I think it's just how some end up puffing on sticks

Yeah I don't try and punch the small ring gauges.
Straight cut for the smaller ones, punch for 50 RG and over.
And don't be ashamed of a Backwoods. I still pick them up when going to deer camp. I'm not going to breat out a $8-$10 stick around a campfire when I'm inebriated anyway and wouldn't enjoy it to the fullest.Check out my Youtube channel, Razorback Piper Guy if you like that sort of thing.

I think wrestling with the hose at times inadvertently caused me to chomp on it a bit. My nubs don't usually look like that.
Being cosmetic I'm not too concerned. Just glad I wasn't eating tobacco!

They should rename the punch to a twist. Twisting the punch works much better than pushing it in...
