I haven't had many mold issues, but I always keep the cello on.
Not worth risking in my opinion. I'll go months without opening my humi or cooler so I don't take any risks. The one time I take all the cello off will be the time my entire humi falls to mold outbreak

I've been keeping at least one humidor (now 4 desktops) for the past 12 years. No cellophane. No mold. Only plume - once or twice. Other than that, they've always looked close to magazine photograph worthy...

One time - just a few sticks (wiped off). This is when I found out 70/70 is a bunch of nonsense, especially with +/- 5/5.
Got a winecooler after that and jacked it up with a tempcontroller (+/- 1*f). That worked fine until I moved to a house with a very temp/humidity- stable basement.

Had one in a coffin that I forgot to crack open a little to acclimate. When I did check it six months down the road it had mold but did not effect any other cigars.
Other than that 1 cigar, haven't had any issues.

This year was the first time I had mold in over 5 years. I leave my cigars as they arrive (as far as cello on or off), so it was confined to a couple of sticks in 3 different boxes. I wiped them down and kept an eye on them and it never came back. I regularly inspect my collection and keep my RH in check (I'm convinced the mold came from the vendor and I just didn't notice upon arrival)....so overall I never really deal with it.

Why I keep cello on in tupperdors which I don't open often. Cello off in my "dry box" which I open almost daily.

Back in about 2010, I got a freebie desktop and "seasoned" it by wiping it down with a wet rag. Figured, "if a little's good, more is better" and I left the wet rag in there for a few days. No visible mold. Super accurate brasstic dial hygrometer reads 73 ish, so I figure I'm ready to drop my bundles of Famous Nics and Flor De Olivas in there and they'll be good to go. A week later, the whole left side of the humi (and sticks) are fuzzy. I realized I was in over my head. ...That's what steered me to this great community.

I've olny had a bad batch of mold once. I bought a box of '98 Punch RS 12s and when the arrived the had a beautiful case of plume (also tasted and smoked amazing). Due to this I smoked them very sparingly. I had them buried at the bottom of the cooler for a couple years when I found them again only to discover they the entire box was overtakes with mold. It was a very sad day when they had to go into the trash. As a result I went back to a wineador and haven't had any problems.
