    How'd You Get Started?

How'd you get started in the hobby of cigars? For me I feel as if it was a pre determined thing, was always drawn to certain things early in life.

Example: When I was under drinking age, all my friends would chip in for a bottle of rum, I always tried to convince them to get a bottle of bourbon. Though I had never tried it at that point, I knew I liked it. Turns out I do like it. Same thing with cigars. Always wanted to try them, once I was able to get something besides a gas station smoke, I knew it was something I wanted to get in to.

I'd have to say on the golf course. I used to always pick up a few sticks to smoke while playing golf or driving. Started with the standards Black and Mild, Swisher and Garcia y Vega - partially out of having no cigar shops around and partially due to limited funds of raising a family. Eventually moved up to Famous samplers and Rocky Patels and when I finally got those damn kids out of the house (lol) I never looked back !
No cigar until you get a par - birdie if it's a scramble !

Smoked cigarettes from about the age of 15. quit a few times in the last 10 years.

The last time I quit cigs I had a chose to never be around my wife again (she still smokes cigs) so I started smoking cigars and pipes, the smell from the cigarettes dose not bother me anymore.

and it has been 3 years 12 days since my last cigarette. that has given me $5,996.72 to spend on cigars :-) also 22,858 cigarettes I have not smoked.

I was an active member of an audio forum and saw an ad from a former member of Poof who had given up the cigar hobby and wanted to trade his cigars, humidor and accessories for a vintage 70's receiver. I had what he was looking for and we made the trade. He also recommended I join Poof to learn about all things cigars.
    Here I is!😎

Have always spent my New Year's Eve with my cousin Joe. One year he decides that we should do more to celebrate then just drink and hands me a Ashton VSG (we had no clue other then it was a cigar). After a couple of inhales, cold sweats, and some over the balcony vomiting I swore off cigars. After telling one of my buddies about the fun that night he said he would show me the ropes. (never knew he even smoked cigars) So he started me off with Kuba Kuba and other very mild cigars. Gradually continued to grow my palate.

The wife and I used to eat at a cigat bar. I always enjoyed looking over the cigar bands. One day I bought one jusr for the band. After having it around a few weeks wife asked if I was going to at least give it a try. Eventually I went into CI to pick up a few more to practice with before trying the first one I purchased. The idea of drawing without inhaling was baffling to me. Wife bought me a punisher that day because she want to be amused by my reaction to it. Jokes on her. Most expensive joke she ever played.

I always enjoyed the occasional cigar (normally a Macanudo - the worlds best selling cigar!) during college and my first few years after. Then one day a buddy of mine brought over an Alec Bradley Maxx for me to smoke as a thank you for something I had done for him. That cigar was so incredibly different than any of the mild cigars I had ever had and I knew I had to have more. That next week I bought a humidor and a box of Maxx. All these years later its still one of my favorite cigars and my humidor, while much larger now, always has a box of Maxx in there.

When I was 16 I went to a friend's house party and had my first drink (Jack Daniels) and my first cigar (a Cuban). I LOVED the JD and HATED the cigar (no one told me not to inhale). Fastforward 7 years and I took a job at Cheap Humidors and started smoking flavored cigars at the local cigar lounge with the rest of the team. I assumed I would still hate regular cigars so I just stuck to the Tatiana and CAO Flavours lines. Then our main cigar guy left the company and the owner asked me to step in and do product testing/reviews. My first "real" cigar was an Oliveros Sun Grown. It was love at first puff.

Right out of high school I worked at a large dept store. They also tossed good stuff with just a Nick on it. They tossed a nice humidor and I dumpster dove. Never wanting to smoking cigs or cigars just thought it was cool. Like @wyntony I would smoke a swisher playing golf. Went on vacation to Moorhead city, nc played a round myself and during that a guy joined me gave me a stick and a few golf tips. He told me he owned a cigar shop and I stopped every time I was down there. Never smokes much but then but must of planted a seed. About 2 yrs ago Found a tiny corn cob pipe in a keepsake box from younger years(pipe must of been from a field trip or something) went to rite aid, found poof was hooked. Then 2 months later was gone. Kept searching for it, found you guys started the bum. Now I moved onto cigars with the help of all you enablers! Can't wait for spring to smoke more sticks. Thanks to all of you!
