Dry, cracked wrappers
Anyone have any ideas on why every so often i pull a Cigar out to smoke that has been in my humidor at 68 degrees and 65% rh for months and just from normal handling and cutting, the wrapper cracks in multiple places and seems very dry?
I'm stumped.

Dry, cracked wrappers
The ones from Cuba are better at 62%, nc’s at 65%. Ideal temp is 70 so if you’re rh is 65% at 68 degrees they may be holding at a higher %. Rumor has it there is a tool to check the humidity of individual smokes…

Mine stay at 62. No issues, and it's been months since I had one.

Maybe poor quality and/or thin wrappers. Happens to me every now and again, but isn't anywhere near common. If it was common, then I'd be looking at my humidor.

If the insides of the cigar are a lot moister than the wrapper the heat will cause the cigar to swell and crack the wrapper. If there air is very dry that can cause a similar effect. Like others said some wrappers are just delicate. I have noticed in the last 6 months or so that the quality of some brands seems to be going down hill. The wrappers on the Ave Maria I have been getting are shit compared to a year ago. You could try if you notice a specific brand or wrapper doing this you could try dry boxing it a day before smoking.

@Tombstone
pretty much summed it up!
I wonder if the quality decline has something to do with C19. Either delays in shipping, or challenges with rollers at the factories.

I have heard reports (Cigar Authority podcast) saying to expect quality to suffer as they rush to get cigars to market to catch up from the Covid shut downs. And one report said to be very careful as we may see the return of beetles as some cut the freeze times before shipping.
No cigar until you get a par - birdie if it's a scramble !

I used to keep all my cc's at 62% but had this problem with wrappers more frequently so I went to 65% and have had noticeably fewer issues. Also Habanos S.A. actually reccomends 65 to 70% for cc's, as does Bovada. Both being sources i would find trustworthy and accurate.
Its only happening with maybe 1 in 20 or so, so not really very common.
I have always assumed that there was a tool to check individual Cigars humidity level, but have never looked into it.
May do some googling on it today

Yeah, I'm talking like 1 in 20 at most, so not common which seems to eliminate any issues with my storage or handling
I haven't noticed any pattern, but honestly since it happens so infrequently I haven't paid much attention to it being a specific brand or wrapper type.
I will start noting this from now on though
