I'm a neat freak and having my cigars rolling all over my humidor has been causing me a bit of anxiety. So I decided to add some new accessories in the way of humidor dividers. Rather than purchasing them ready made I wanted to set-up my humidor based on MY cigar preference so they would need to be made to custom lengths. Here is the step by step instructions for how I did it.
Materials Needed:
Humidor
Spanish Cedar- I got mine from Gym_Bob_In_Maine and excellent ebayer who took my order, cut the material and mailed it the same day for $7+ Shipping!
Furniture Felt- Available at most Wal-Marts, Lowes, etc
Mitre or Other Straight Cut Saw
Sand Paper
Drill (Optional)
Jig Saw (Optional)
Here is a pic of my main humidor. Sorry I forgot to take a picture of the mess in there before hand.
I started by measuring the inside dimensions of my box, my humidity devices and my cigars of course.
Since I already had Gym Bob cut the spanish cedar to height (1.75") and a rough length I just needed to cut to pressure fit.
I decided to add a decorative element to assist with airflow using the jig saw, but this is not necessary. Once I made my cuts I used a fine sand paper to get rid of the rough edges.
Next I drilled holes to further improve airflow, specifically where it wrapped around my HF tubes. This is also not a needed step and you may want to think twice about it. When I drilled the holes the front side looked fine but the backside had splintered outwards requiring a lot more sanding and leaving a rough appearance.
I was going to buy felt at Lowes, but going through a junk drawer in our kitchen I found these self adhesive felt sheets. I placed each end of the divider on the felt and used a pen to trace around it then used scissors to cut it out and finally attached it to each end of the divider .
Est voila! For a couple bucks in materials my anxiety level has eased and my humidor is finally organized. The dividers have not only cleaned up my box and added space for more sticks, but they have added a wonderful cedar smell that my cheap humidor lacked. I am going to add a cross divider to each of the top shelves to keep the lanceros from sliding front to back. I still have lots of cedar left over, which I can use as my cigars organization changes, but right now I laid the extras inside my fridgador which smells amazing. I am clueless when it comes to using power tools, though lord knows I have tons of em and trust me if I can do it, you can do it.
